I went digging through old games on footballreference.com and found this. Same game you are pointing out.

 

Kenny may never be known for his deep ball. When you think of Joe Montana, you don’t think of a QB who’s apt to go over the top on you at anytime. I hope he at least shows that he’s capable of beating teams deep to keep defenses off balance. One thing’s for sure, he’ll always be dink and dunk under Canada’s system.

 

yeah, we still need to find viable replacements for AV and a LG (and C?), but i think KP still should have enough time to go deep. He has the receivers in Pickens and DJ (who is not AB but still can go deep). That leaves me to believe its Canada/Tomlin and the scheme; seems he's not being encouraged to go deep. Don't know why, he did it in college. Maybe their not comfortable with his deep ball in practice...?? I think they got to let him let it fly. You don't get better at something if you don't try. And our running game will never really get off the ground until we can stretch the field - he's missed on a few deeper passes but he has to keep trying - he's got to get more encouragement from the coaching staff on that.
