Tomlin said he brought in Wile to motivate Berry. If he needs to be motivated then kick his buns off the team. Initially I thought Wile was a backup plan in case Boswell's contract fell through. Now I know he punts as well. Why not dump Berry and keep the low cost guy who can punt well and be a backup for Boswell in case of injury? Jack Lambert says he never understood why people needed to be motivated to play football. Apparently Berry does not have the same attitude.

Assuming Wile outperforms Berry in the Preseason finale, I would concur that Berry is as good as gone.

Steelers would save salary by dumping Berry and only pay essentially "chump change" to Wile.

24 hours to find out! :herewego:

I doubt anyone in the NFL needs to be motivated. They wouldn't have made it to that level in the first place if they did. Seems to be a poor choice of words to me. That being said, I would give both of them an opportunity to prove themselves to be the competition winner this next game and give the job to whomever out performs the other.

Why wait one more game to make the decision? Wile has out punted berry the whole preseason by a good margin.

    No doubt true.

Within that same vein though, Berry is still the proven commodity on the team. Cannot just dump a player like that; position being irrelevant.

I also have been very impressed with Matt Wile. Like all who have entered Latrobe though, one must prove themselves worthy for the entire journey in order to make the final 53.

I agree he has to finish but the last game shouldn't define all that was accomplished in the prior 3. The more you can do thingy has to also account for something. We are also talking a big savings towards the cap. The 24 yard punt by berry this preseason pretty much sealed the deal with me. Proven commodity's shouldn't be doing that. There is such a fine line of home field advantage like we saw last year. One of those kicks could be the straw.

Shall I believe you or Jack Lambert? Hmmm ... Not a tough decision. Jack knows. You can't possibly know.

Berry is pretty good at dropping the punt inside the 20 but otherwise is not really very good or consistent. If Wile can also drop them in deep then I don't see why they shouldn't go with him. Berry has consistently been in the bottom half of punters in average distance and last year he was almost dead last.

Berry’s inconsistency is his problem. It seems like we get one shank a game.

We’ve struggled with getting a consistent punter for as long as I can remember, though.

If Wile punts better than Berry vs. Panthers... Wile should get the spot. Berry reminds me of Mitch Berger back in '08. He would make some good punts every once in a while, but most of them are short and give the opposing team better field position than it should have.

Did I miss something, how long has this competition between the two been going on? This should have been going on all camp/preseason instead of announcing it before the final preseason game.

I'm not sure 5 preseason punts is enough of a sample size to say "We should do THIS" given Wile's historic averages (as opposed to how Wile and Berry have looked in practice, etc.) That being said, there would appear to be limited downside risk to the move.... until Wile shanks his first punt.....

Berry is very erratic. I know he has the leg to punt a decent distance, but in game his kicks come up short.

You’d be surprised. There are definitely people who get by on natural talent alone.

That being said, I’m sure the word choice just meant that he wanted to “light a fire” under Berry. Either way I’d keep Wile.
