Just got a chance to really watch our loss to KC...

With the game being on Christmas, I didn't get a chance to watch the game as close as I would like. It was on in the background and I did watch, but it was hard to focus on.

I just got a chance to watch it and I paid very close attention to defensive coverages and how the players were talking to each other. A couple observations.

1. Cam Sutton is really bad at football.
2. Our defensive players are very confused out there, all of them, not just Sutton
3. Queen and Minkah are being hung out to dry due to #2
4. We play far too much cover 3 and our deep safety is way too deep
5. Probably more stuff but I forgot already, I probably drink too much, or maybe not enough

Cam Sutton is making bad decisions out there. He's taking bad angles and at times passing guys off when there's no one to pass them off to. He's just letting guys go past him and he ends up covering no one. That Kelce TD, he let Kelce go right past him into the end zone even though Minkah was covering the corner route. There was no one else on that side of the field for Sutton to even cover. Just horrible decision making. But that leads me right into #2.

Our guys really don't know their assignments out there. They are confused and aren't communicating well with each other. You can see it in their body language. Lots of finger pointing, hands in the air, staring at each other, hands on hips, etc. It's not just one guy either, it's all of them. I don't know if the scheme is too complicated or what, but it's insane the communicating issues going on.

When in Cover 3, we leave a safety like 20 yards deep. Almost every play, he did nothing because the play was too far away for him to do anything. We're basically playing with 10 guys out there. I saw this far too often. That has to change.

With a guy like Wilson, we're only going to score so many points. Our offence needs help. The miscommunication stuff has to stop, but it's been going on for years now. It's literally a coaching issue. Yeah, Sutton sucks, but if the players don't know what they're assignment is, that's on the coaches. A safety playing so far back he's not even in the play is on the coaches. They need to make adjustments and soon, or we're going to have a short playoff run.

 

Heyward was saying after the game about how 10 guys are doing their job, he was probably talking about Sutton as the guy who wasn't doing their job.

 

This isn't just a Cameron Sutton issue though. For that matter, this isn't just a Patrick Queen issue either. Schematically speaking, there are serious deficiencies with the coverages that are being asked to run. Miscommunication is one thing.


Coverage breakdowns based on bad coaching?! That is another aspect all together.





Long story short?! Plenty of blame to go around. As I said in another thread and again, not having Joey Porter Jr is going to sting.

 

This same narrative could've/was told after the 2017 AFC Conference final and here we are

 

I just hope we don't have to face Tim Tebow again.

 

How was all of this not obvious earlier in the season? The personnel is obviously different with Porter missing and Sutton coming in but surely that can’t fully explain it

Look no further then the individual who's' scheme it is. But hey at least they are aware of it in week 18

 

Bengals Offensive line sucks but if we only rush 4 players all game long Burrow is going to have a field day.

It's been like this for years. Without pressure from the edges, this Defense is bad. It's why the Steelers consistently lose when Watt is out. These are the reasons why rational people are fed up with Tomlin and Rooney despite the media telling us how amazing those two are.

 

When you paying top dollar on defense and the defense sucks you then have to look to the coach.

I was just starting to recover from the Sid Bream slide when the Steelers blew that game against the Chargers.

 

The day Pirates baseball died forever.

 

That was the last Steelers game my father was alive for. I'd say that game killed him but he lived into the summer. Amazing to think they've only won 3 playoff games since then, one due to Burfict.

The three QBs they've beaten AJ McCarron, Alex Smith and Matt Moore.

Man that's freaking depressing

 

Austin needs to go. Canada was a major blunder, Austin is the other one.

Im thinking keeping Tomlin around this long is the third blunder. He allows all this to happen. I dont see how they let him finish his contract. Go ahead and win a playoff game (doubtful) it shouldnt change the fact that the coaching staff is below average.

 

But we will not have a losing season .
