Just wanted to get the boards opinion on this guy? It would be too early at 17, but maybe in later rounds?

Is he overhyped? Or is he the real deal?

Is he a good fit for the Steelers 3-4?

cyprien would look great in our defense... problem is I believe we have more pressing needs in the early rds...... safety is pretty deep, so I expect us to grab one in the middle rds.......... cyprien is going in the 2nd, so I don't see us getting him despite my admiration for his game.

i dont know a whole lot about him other than at the end of the season he was looked at as a mid to late rounder. now he is a 2nd or 3rd rounder. i worry about people who jump up alot after workouts

I'm high on Cyprien. He's got a high football IQ, can play in almost any coverage, and has a nose for the ball which is an attribute this team obviously needs in a player. He'll probably go in the beginning of round two, though.

I don't know anything about him. I heard Philip Thomas a safety from Fresno State is good in coverage and that's what the Steelers need he should be around in the middle rounds.

I finally had a chance to watch a few Cyprien games other than the Senior Bowl. I agree with other positive comments in this thread. He is very good safety, and can impact in the box or in coverage. He looks good in zone and man coverage.

my trouble is his speed. we need to get faster on defense. 4.64 isn't very fast for a safety. there are several LB'ers in this class bigger and faster.

He certainly looks fast on tape, it is hard to gauge though because of the level of competition he faced... Was he that much better or were the teams he faced very mediocre???

well i'd say yes they were mediocre. it was Fla.international's schedule. i'm not saying he's a bad player, but there are LB'ers just as fast. we need some speed back there. troy has slowed. clark has slowed. ike has slowed. foote. keisel.woodley.worilds isn't a blazer. we need some defensive team speed added not taken away. in a few years when cyprian loses a step,he's running in the 4.8 range. no more slow come into the picture late safeties. please.

You have football speed and track speed. If he's gonna play FS he doesn't need as much track speed. Either way I kinda agree with Mac, we do need to get faster on D.

I'm hoping Johnny gets drafted early. I'm really really hoping we can get Phillip Thomas in the 3rd but I doubt he'll be there.

Thomas in the 3rd would be a great pickup. I can also see them taking someone like TJ McDonald in the 4th. The kid's smart, physical, and he's a film room junkie.

Cyprien is a lot faster looking on the field in pads and cleats. Not that his 40 in sweats is something to be concerned about IMO, but his 40 time was 4.56 at his pro day. Elam ran a 4.54...

I used to consider 40 times to be relatively important. Then I started watching for functional game speed and quickness on tape, and my opinion changed drastically. Both Cyprien and Vaccaro ran in the low 4.6 range, yet when you watch them on film they are moving quicker than "faster" guys on the field. They are both able to flip their hips in coverage in a flash and stay with a receiver turning upfield, which means that they have the functional speed and quickness to play near the line and still cover (critical for today's safeties). Then you watch a "faster" guy like Eric Reid and see that he completely lacks that ability to change direction on a dime. Don't get me wrong, Reid will be a very good "center fielder" type of safety, but there will be limitations in how he is used. Cyprien doesn't have those limitations.

Another thing to look at - Cyprien is a really good tackler. He makes a lot of textbook wrap-up tackles, and I only think I've seen 1 play on tape (in 3 games) where he hit a guy high, and it was a QB who was scrambling, not a defenseless receiver. Elam on the other hand has a tendency to lead with his helmet and "hit" someone instead of tackling him. He's going to need to work on that before he can be a quality NFL starter.

Cyprien is now my clear #2 safety behind Vaccaro.

Cyprien is a good in the box safety. His coverage probably isn't quite as good, but as long as he keeps the play in front of him he will be ok. I certainly would not take him at #17, but would consider him in the 2nd round. Although as most know by now, I want a S in Round 3.

i don't look much for top straight line speed but more on there quickness times. 10 yd.-20-yd. splits. 3 cone drills. short shuttle drills. these bring out a truer show of their quickness in short area's and ability to change direction quicker to man up on slot guys if they have too. if they can hang with slots they can hang with TE's and RB's.

cyprian is not great at staright line speed or quickness. is troy a good wrap up tackler? does he take chances with shoulder big hits? for an all around guy that can make things happen around the LOS and also able to hang with slot guys or pass defend as a deep or two deep guy, elam is that type. i still believe he has the better overall game. troy isn't a big safety either, nor is clark. i don't remember us ever having big safeties. out of the best defenses we have had in pittsburgh, they were fast. we have lost alot of speed and quickness and need to add it back.

I too believe he is on the Steelers radar. I cannot gauge how this draft will go down.
The elite talent is just not there for the teams picking in the top 10. Oh well we shall see.
