I'm sure there will be repercussions for Johnson making that statement. Next, he will be getting taunting penalties for rolling his eyes.

Wow, lots of stuff to go through on this thread. Good discussion.

For my part, I think the league has too much to lose by letting the refs dictate the outcomes of games. That being said the refs definitely put their thumbs on the scale at times to change the flow of games.

I like to think most of the time poor calls are just mistakes and that over the long run they will equal out over the course of the game. Sunday they did not. The poor calls were egregious and they were all in the favor of one team.

the DPI on Pierre didn’t happen. He made a great play.

The offsides on the FG wasn’t just NOT offsides on the Steelers, it was actually offsides on the Jags.

Neal hitting Joey Lawrence was textbook for hitting the midsection, leading with the shoulder, and easing off so as to avoid putting your weight on the QB yet still flagged. The hit that knocked Kenny out was the exact opposite but was NOT flagged.

I’m with STD and others who’ve said it. Call it the same for both teams. When you have a clear example of the same infraction (QB hits) yet it is called exactly opposite of how the rules state depending on which team the call or no call will favor I have some questions.

Shaner made some good points above, but I disagree that it would need to be some grand conspiracy including the players. If that shady FG penalty was the last play of the game and I’m the line judge and looking for neutral zone infractions is my responsibility on FGs (I don’t know if it is) and I know my brother bet $10,000 on the Jags, I could make up that penalty and single-handedly affect the game.

I know that is a lot of IFs, but it can clearly be done by just one ref without the players’ involvement.

I try to stay mellow and positive in my old age. Very rarely in my life have I turned off a Steelers game. I did Sunday. Whether a ref or the whole crew was shady or just plain inept, that crew didn’t even make an attempt to hide their bias. I don’t want to watch scripted outcomes like it’s pro wrestling.

You can read his lips. Ignore his first comment and read his lips on the second comment. its pretty clear.

I can understand the bad judgment calls, like a line judge watching a receivers feet for the sideline toe tap but missed the fact that he never clearly possessed the ball. That's why a quick discussion can wipe those away. It's the plays where it's obvious that there are certain standards for star players and ones for ordinary ones and they are at times so obvious that it is incredible anyone argues that there aren't.

Example: Earlier in the thread I brought up the no call on Watt after batting the ball and his hand hitting Lawrence's helmet and face mask. Some said he got the ball first so no foul, others that it didn't rise to the level of a penalty. All very true but had that been 4 yrs ago and Brady, well your pinkie finger grazes his helmet and it was roughing. Meanwhile during Ben's career I lost track of how many times he was twisted like a pretzel by 3 defenders at each level of his body while being sacked and the refs didn't blow the play dead.

What's really annoying of late is the clear times a play is over on an incompletion or QB manages to make the throwing motion but lame duck pass and the refs are scared to blow the play dead for fear it's a turnover. Blow it dead then sort it out.

You’re right that was infuriating. Ben gets a broken nose on a clothesline from Ngata and no flag. Hit Brady with your fingernail and it was an automatic 15 yards

Yeah, that DPI on Pierre was weak, it looked like he made a good play and the ref threw the flag late. Pickett has been hit a bunch of times with no flags thrown, against the Raiders Crosby hit Pickett in the head twice no flags thrown IIRC.

I joke about thr Ravens and tipped balls but it was a real thing that to this day blows my mind. It's hard to find the games on youtube but I have seen the highlights where you can clearly see it. Towards the end of Ward's career he was in motion and got to the end of the line, Ben took a single step turns to fire on the wr screen but a Ravens linemen got his hand up and deflected the ball and Suggs damn near killed Ward. Knocked him out of the game and no penalty for unnecessary roughness. That's where I learned about everything being legal on a tipped ball and the Ravens use it like crazy.

Actually, I would think that's exactly what you don't want the refs to do. There are a lot of examples of the refs blowing a play dead too early and then being unreviewable because of the whistle.

For example: a swing pass to a back is ruled incomplete and the whistle is blown but the defense thinks it's a backwards pass and picks it up for a scoop and score. Play is reviewed, turns out it was a backwards pass and there was a clear recovery so it's ruled a turnover. However, because the play was blown dead, the ball cannot be advanced after recovery so no touchdown.
Things like that happen quite frequently in the NFL.

This analysis is spot on. To compare the Steelers fanbase to Jacksonville is laughable.

That's not too bad considering what he said. What gets me is Warren getting over $90,000 fine for blocking with the crown of his helmet. He will missing almost 3 game checks, he's only 5'8" so he's trying to block guys over a half of a foot taller than him the best that he can.

I think Warren has been fined like 48,000 twice, that might be more than he gets in a game check.

Especially considering that fine is after agent cut taxes etc

    About doubles the hit

I think depending on income they do spread the fines out over multiple checks although I have no idea where that brain cell came from

Nope, it comes out of the next paycheck. They do not mention what happens if your fine is more than your paycheck.

Accountability: Fines & Appeals | NFL Football Operations
Players subject to accountability measures receive a letter informing them of what they did, a video of the play in question, why they are being fined and how much it will cost them. They also receive information on how to appeal the fine. If they choose not to appeal, the fine is withheld from their next game check.
