You don't bench him because they need him to win games, none of the other receivers on the roster are good enough to replace him, Tomlin and the WR coach need to let him know that kind of effort isn't acceptable.

Cowher wouldn't have given two rips if he needed him or not, he would be benched for some period of time. A quarter, a half, a game ... however long enough until the message sinks in.

I agree. I really hope they addressed this with him. Decent talent and a hard worker but I think he's immature. That sequence on the fumble made him look like a pouting little brat. If I was him seeing this in the film room with my coaches and teammates, I'd be looking for a place to hide.

 

Personally, I don't really know why everybody is hanging on to the touchdown catch part of that game. Yes, he didn't maintain possession all the way to the ground but the defensive back made a good play and hindsight tells us it should have actually been a touchdown.
The larger issue, to me, is the lack of effort on the fumble. That play presents a much bigger problem than whatever happened on the touchdown throw.

That's a lot of coin for an inconsistent player. Drops, running backwards, giving up on plays. I will go on the record of being in favor of his contract extension. But at this point it's been the same issues with him. Hopefully Khan can pull a fast one and get at least a 3rd for him.

 

My favorite DJ play was when he ran backwards again to lose yards - that’s worst than a drop.

I thought one reason Flores was hired to fix the fact that Tomlin doesn't trust anyone in a position to actually see and analyze the replays. Oh, I see he just said that to get the media off his back.

 

Don't bench him, make him play special teams and be the backup kick returner just to see if it humbles him.

 

Then the first string KR goes down, DJ comes in, proceeds to drop every single kick off except for the one where he runs backwards into the end zone for a safety. Yikes!
