    I read it clear enough

For some people it’s easier to lie than admit a mistake

    I agree with this.

But I will ad it that O Khan seems to have a preternatural ability to get these things right and consistently delivers contract numbers below what many are expecting.

Or how many don't comprehend that SEA had even more leverage over Witherspoon because they exercised the 5th year option. So he was cost-controlled for the next 4 years for his 5 year contract (1 current year, 4 year extension). If the contract is the same length (and 5 year contracts are good for teams because that's the max you can spread the cap hit for the signing bonus over), Porter has more leverage over the Steelers than Witherspoon had over SEA.

Kahn didn't wake up today and suddenly remember that he can franchise Porter next year if he wants to. Both sides probably agree on the majority of the contract.

They are likely negotiating over guarantees. The team is probably pushing one, but saying that the second year is basically guaranteed when you look at their track record...but not calling it guaranteed means Rooney puts a lot less money in escrow. Porter is probably pointing to the Steelers giving DK 2x guaranteed years despite him never being a 1st team AP (the previous bar for non-QBs). And that DK was an outside guy while the Steelers have always prided themselves on keeping good home-grown talent.

Porter's team is probably also hoping that the Gonzales deal happens before the Steelers contract negotiation deadline. Because it will increase the market again.

All offseason, I've been saying (along with many others) that this will get done go to the last minute because the CB market was clearly going to be reset this offseason. And the longer you wait, the more you get paid. The exception would have been in Gonzales and Witherspoon both signed. Then there's no more "hidden" info about the market so waiting wouldn't benefit Porter.

My guess is that it gets done on Friday. But maybe he pushes it to the last minute like Troy did. And the last minute for a home game (this year) is probably a little later than the Saturday when they were boarding the plan (which IIRC is what happened with Troy).

Press Conference begins today at 3 PM EST. Those interested should tune in. I would all but guarantee that an inquiry about the Peezy Jr contract situation will be brought up.

No way it isn't at this point. As for what I believe?! What I have been saying this whole time; Peezy Jr will get paid.

Can the Steelers afford to go into Rodgers absolute final season, when they have clearly done their best to build a "win now" team, with a new HC who was not a popular choice, but also clearly a "win now" pick, without their best CB under contract?

These two things seem incongruous and counter-productive to me.

I can confirm that journalism is not dying.

    It's long since dead.

If only this were only true for sports journalism.

I think it's probably because we are not a "win now" team.

It seems like many Steelers beat writers talk about the team this way. And I guess it makes some sense because we're certainly not doing much to focus on the medium term (to our detriment IMO).

But a team doing everything to "win now" does stuff like trading future high value draft capital (think Rams). Or signs aging outside UFA vets at huge contracts where you know it's going to be terrible value in a couple years, but you only really care about the window now.

We were never really a "win now" team at the end of Ben's tenure...this is when it makes sense to be in "win now" mode IMO.

We're kind of in limbo. The focus is still on winning the next game over player development / better draft prospects. But we're not selling the future for the present (which is how I would describe a "win now" team).

We're doing all we can to make the playoffs without sacrificing the future. But it seems to me that we've kind of hollowed out the medium term since we have no real plan for what happens at QB.

I'd like to believe this means we commit to a rebuild next offseason. But if Rooney was willing to do that, I think we'd have seen it sometime in the last 3 off seasons.

I don't really think you need to be trading high draft picks and signing huge FA contracts be be in win now mode, Art said we 'aint doing no damn rebuild, so I expect to contend for playoff wins. The Rams situation is different they're an elite team with a realistic chance winning the SB, so they go all-in and it's already worked once.

There's levels and nuance to this, like you i'd have drawn a line and rebuilt years ago, but he wonlt do that, so I assume that means we're in win now mode. Can't have it both ways Art, so anything less than winning a playoff game is a failure to me.

I guess I think that what we've been doing is "pretending" to be in win-now mode. Without "pulling out the stops". Because selling the future for this present doesn't make any sense.

But we market it as "winning now" and get the beat writers to parrot it.

But some very astute fans might notice that while there is winning in the regular season, it hasn't happened in the playoffs.

Because we're really in "protect the status quo" mode.

No major movement on the contract updates during today's press conference regarding JP Jr. This should shock no one. As I said though, it will happen.

Just a matter of timing. If not, he plays anyways.

This is a fair point IMO.

The Steelers (smartly IMO) don't say this specifically. Because it's not true.

It's more people covering the team...probably trying to generate clicks. I think someone recently pointed out how Journalism was dying..

So instead of reading again to find your mistake, you chose to try to cover with fictional nonsense.
