Joey Porter Jr contract negotiations

one year he got it. two years were more of a struggle. not terrible but not great. he has lost the coach that got him to this point don't forget. he really needs to prove it for a second year in a row for him to be anointed one of the best we have had. it's hard to judge him since he isn't practicing or playing. he is under contract. one good year doesn't make him the greatest ever. can he do it without his coach? the worst thing that could happen is he digresses and we have paid him a ton of money. who wins then?

 

Hines was worse than both Watt and JPJ. In part because the CBA allowed him to hold out.

But everyone loves Hines.

This is just how it works. Fans hate players during negotiations. Because athletes make way more money than normal people and it seems absolutely crazy for us people with regular incomes to imagine holding out for a better deal than $28mm / year even though his market value is probably something like $33mm / year after the Witherspoon contract. But my guess is that most of us would be fighting pretty hard for that extra $25MM over 5 years.

 

He's given up 1 TD in 3 years (and 0 TDs in the last 2 years) while often facing the best WRs on the other team.

He's a very good CB.

Compare his stats to Gardiner's over his first 3 years. They are very similar.

On top of that, he's our best draft pick since Watt. That alone isn't a reason to keep him. But it matters IMO.

 

I'm still looking for the quote from Porter's camp that he wants to be the highest, or even the third highest paid CB in the league. Can't seem to find it anywhere. This is all media speculation fanning the flames.
JPJ's camp has handled this whole contract ordeal with team awareness. No social media, no crazy comments. Nothing the media can latch onto and fan the flames. That's a big plus for JPJ.

I can assure I wouldn’t be fitting hard for that extra money. I would be very content with the 28 mm per year. I would take the higher garuntee over the higher aav but that is just me. You are right I hate when every player does this. It’s a little different with JPJ though he barely has any tenure and he is acting like a Prima Donna. I absolutely believe his Dad is partly behind this and it is very personal.

Dk just restructured his contract clearing up 18 million. maybe they will use that to sign Porter ?

There are currently five cornerbacks who make at least $30 million per season — Witherspoon, Denzel Ward, Trent McDuffie, Sauce Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr. All of them have not only made the Pro Bowl or All-Team team, they each have at least two Pro Bowl or All-Pro nominations.

If Porter made $28 million per season, he would still be paid more than Jaycee Horn, Patrick Surtain II and DaRon Bland. Those three cornerbacks have each made multiple Pro Bowls as well.

 

Maybe a sign they are close

 

My god this thing sounds like the Harrison contract fiasco all over again. Sports writers creating drama out of thin air.

 

I am not sure that would affect signing Porter now

They would be signing him to an extension and the bigger dollars won’t kick in until next season

 

How F-in clueless do you have to be to go on Pittsburgh radio on a game day and accuse the Steelers of low balling Porter? Then right after make the statement that you dont know if the eve n started negotiations yet but are sure they know each others numbers and the Steelers number was low. Then follow that bs up with another I have no sources that is what's been offered but I'm sure that what's going on. Talk about piss poor job performance.

i never said get rid of him. let's start there. now his 1 TD stat is deceiving as well. many times he committed a penalty that put the other team in scoring position even though he wasn't the guy that gave up the TD. don't forget that. so stats can say a lot that is not the complete truth of the situation.

JPJ wasn't even in the top 25 of most penalized CBs last year. The only CB that was a Steeler that was was Slay.

 

Devon Witherspoon the highest paid CB in the NFL at 33 million per year gave up 2 td passes in 2025, and had 3 penalties.
JPJ at 3,924,000 gave up 0 tds, and had 6 penalties.
Somehow JPJ isn't a top 5 in people's eyes. LoL

That why I said about the Harrison contract where they stirred up fan hatred because Bouchette reported that the Steelers offered more than the Bengals and he chose them over the Steelers. When in actuality he chose money in hand vs a heavily incentive laden contract with no guarantees he'd get that money. I dont know how many times I had to make that argument. He took cash in hand over promises and unless the promises were easily attainable like show up for camp day one and we give you 5 million, dont miss a day of camp we give you 10 million type promises then take the cash in hand.

For people like me who are always looking at Joey's INT number and complaining, Devon Witherspoon is your "Trump Card".

Unfortunately that’s all we have to go by.

 

I'd imagine that he isn't the only DB to commit penalties to avoid TDs...which is a good thing BTW.

I think if you look at his penalties vs. Gardiner in his first 3 years the different isn't as big as you think.

I think it's also true that the aggressiveness that gets him penalties is also part of the reason he does well against big physical WRs. It's kind of like Ben...you take the good with the bad. And hope the player can learn to keep the good while minimizing the bad. Porter did a better job of that last year.

The most likely outcome here is that he signs the deal before game 1 and people don't really care by the end of the season (unless / until he "turns into a pumpkin"). Just like Hines. Just like Watt.
