Joey Porter Jr contract negotiations

Do people really think that if Porter blew out his knee badly and there was a chance he would never be the same player, that the team wouldn't use that against him and sign him to a lesser contract?

This is common sense that has to be used here. I want him to be in camp, but I understand the dynamics of being a player. I played the game and was banged up often. I've been on the field with teammates that were badly injured and were never able to play competitive football again. The game is no joke, and nothing is promised when it comes to health.

2. That's not how the contracts work in the NFL.
Example: Dak Prescott has been at a time the Highest paid Qb in the league, and nobody thinks he's the best Qb in the league.
Jaxon Smith Njibga is the highest paid Wr...he isn't the best Wr in the NFL.
Will Anderson is the Highest paid DE..he isn't the best DE in the NFL.
J. Gibbs is the highest paid RB in the NFL, but he isn't the best RB in the NFL.
Need I go on?

1st it was you said he couldn't tackle, he fixed that, and then you said he got too many penalties, he fixed that, the man is the best CB we have had since Rod Woodson, and people act like great CBs grow on trees. There is a reason he's the best CB we have had since then, because they don't

Ike was very good, and better at tackling, but JPJ is already a better cover man than Ike was at his best,and He is still getting better.
JPJ isn't playing with the safeties that Ike played with either.

This is what he is worth to me.
I could easily put in incentives, I know I saw where the Steelers don't do much of that... but you have to advance. Porter thinks he is top 5, then it's up to him to get it.
But I am non-negotiable on the numbers.

JPJr has improved and had a one good year last year I just don’t parlay that into a top 5 contract

I get your point but a lot of cb’s recently have just signed contracts. Cb’s who may be;eve are better than Porter. He wants paid more than them. If Dak and Mahomes were up in the same year I doubt Dak gets paid more. Even with all of thus why not put incentives in the contract? That seems to be the most fair.

I guess the question I was asking is where does your number come from?

Aside from being in the range you provided? Currently, the top 5 CB contracts by AAV are: 30MM, $30.1MM, $31MM, $31.1MM, and $33MM.

Does knowing the actual top 5 CB range change your mind about the numbers you have here?

Other potential questions that a player would no doubt ask:

• Where does your range come from? Because it's not the top 5 CBs in the NFL. And the Gonzalez contract will be the highest contract of all of them by the end of the offseason. Porter will be in the top 5 too. Assumes both sign. So the top 5 CBs when the season starts will likely start at $31MM
• Why is Witherspoon outside of your range for a top 5 CB?
• Why do you think that Porter is so much worse than Witherspoon?
• Why do you think that Witherspoon is worth ~ 15% more than Porter is?
• How could you think that offering so much less than Witherspoon is anything other than telling Porter you don't want him to stay?

As described above, the stuff about when he becomes cuttable isn't the question when we're only talking about AAV. That's a question about structure and guarantees. If he had a huge AAV, a small signing bonus, no guarantees and a contract that was massively back-loaded then he'd be cuttable in year 1 no matter what the AAV was. This obviously won't happen for Porter. But that's almost the correct description for Benton.

You're low-balling Porter with the number you have. And telling him that we don't really want him on the team*.

* Note: I really like Porter and would pay him right around Witherspoon (probably a little more) if the structure was reasonable. But if I could flip him for a 1st round pick I'd do that. Having a very good CB like Porter is really important for team success. But it doesn't matter without a QB. And I'd rather have 2x 1sts so I can move up to get a QB I like. I don't think Rooney would sacrifice the present like this though.
