I would think Brisker and Elliot are the two starting safeties. Unless Elliot is still hurt or not ready to start the season. Ramsey at Nickel/slot corner.

 

Last I saw Elliott was listed as questionable to start the season

Then I read this recently

Elliott declared he is back to form as training camp begins next month.

 

I have liked Elliot so far when he is on the field problem is he seems to get hurt often. That starting 5 secondary could be pretty potent if healthy.

i'd like to see castro show up this year. the kid has a good head and feel for the position. his only problem was his speed. hopefully they are working on that in the offseason. if he can lower that a few 10ths or more he will eventually be a good weapon like elliott.

This makes the most sense IMO. In 3 safety looks, Ramsey can play safety and roll Brisker into the box. It also allows us to let Echols and Samuel battle for a dime role.

On paper, the defense looks better than last season. We got a big upgrade at CB2 and we hopefully won't have to play Ramsey at S full time for large swaths of the season. The real question is going to be how the scheme works. Its a much more modern scheme and will be vastly different than what Tomlin had been running for years. In many ways that is a good thing, but being new it could take a bit of time to get used to.

 

Ties in with your other post on MM and details. Previous teams seemed to lack a detailed understanding of their roles and the schemes. This led to miscommunications and confusion.

 

we could cut porter and re-sign Artie Burns. He was a first round draft pick. Like Kenny Pickett. Like Jarvis Jones. Like Broderick Jones.....we'd save money.

Good stuff. I simply think his game doesn't really fit at free safety. He is at his best being aggressive, which is going to get him in trouble when he has to play deep. We already saw that last season.

 

Maybe, but the problem there is that he misses a lot of tackles.

 

I'd be shocked if Ramsey was anywhere other than slot corner. He could play safety in the dime, get sent on some more exotic blitzes, or cover a couple other roles in specific areas (Graham likes versatile pieces).... but I would gather that the majority of his snaps come in the slot so teams can't just send their top guy in there to avoid our boundary CB's or covering the bigger "move" TE's.

Tomlin played him as the "alpha" CB1, which just wasn't who he is anymore.. but he's still a good player who can cover, he just isn't covering some of the highest end WR's anymore like he did when he was younger. He's physical enough to take the receiving TE's and "big slots". That should be his specialty with Porter and Dean on the outside. He can be CB2 if needed due to injury.

 

The Steelers also thought Slay was still a CB1/2. He wasn't. Obviously. Lots of mistakes made. New coaches might help.
