So sad on many levels to pass this along. Former Steelers/Lions player Jimmy Allen, my friend and my avatar, and member of 2 Steelers championship teams, has passed away at age 67.

This is not public news -until now- and there has been no obit or funeral yet. I heard this news about an hour ago from his daughter in law. Apparently Jimmy had been complaining of stomach pains. A couple of days past Thanksgiving, a relative found him dead at his home. The funeral is pending an autopsy.

As some of you know, I knew Jimmy and wrote a couple of articles about him.

The family asked me to get the news out so still in the process of doing it. This is among the first places I shared it.

Was glad to know him. An unforgettable character, always positive no matter what life threw his way, and one of the giant invincible heroes of my youth.

it's another loss of a player from our great Super Bowl teams of the 1970's. Jimmy was part of that great 1974 draft class and of the Super Bowl IX/X teams.

Your avatar made me look up Jimmy Allen. I forgot all about him until I saw one of your post some months back.

So glad for him that he was a part of that wonderful Steeler time.

in a nice bit of symmetry, I will be in person to see the Steelers play the Jets on Sunday. It was against those same Jets that Jimmy made the first of 31 career interceptions back in 1975, in a game I can still remember.

I guess there is only a few of us on the board who remember seeing Jimmy Allen play. I knew he was a ball hawk but I didn't realize that he had 31 career picks. In a secondary with Mel Blount, Donnie Shell, Mike Wagner, Glen Edwards, JT Thomas etc. there weren't too many opportunities for interceptions because those other guys had a lot.

arguably one of the greatest draft classes ever:
    • Lynn Swann, WR Southern California
    • Jack Lambert, LB Kent State
    • John Stallworth, WR Alabama A&M
    • Jimmy Allen, DB UCLA
    • Mike Webster, C Wisconsin

67 is way too young but for 67 years he was a shining light to those around him. Sorry to hear about your friend and a great underrated Steeler and overall NFL player. I was around during those times and remember his presence.

Also got Donnie Shell and Randy Grossman as undrafted players. Donnie could easily be in the hall, Randy earned 4 SB rings..the type of player every teams needs.

Thanks for sharing the news. This is really sad for us fans that grew up in the dynasty years.
Jimmy (Spiderman)was a very good football player and was a definite asset to helping the Steelers win
those two titles. And if I recall just as you stated when he played for the Steelers he was always joyful
and it always looked like he was having fun playing a game not many people get paid to do. RIP Jimmy Allen 45

Sad to hear about jimmy. RIP and say hey to all your other team mates that have gone on too early.

Did I see Franco run through contact to score that TD? Hmmmmmm. Wasn't there a thread that said he didn't do that? :smiley1::cool:

Many have said, greatest draft class ever. I don't believe it could ever be matched. Four hall of famer's in the same team draft year.:applaud:
