Ugh. I cringe when Nantz announces Pittsburgh games, since I've always felt he carries an anti-Steeler bias. Not a fan when he calls games for Tarheels basketball either. I just hit the mute button and give my own commentary/game analysis...out of earshot of my 3 year-old daughter, of course.

I miss Gus Johnson. I loved his goofy enthusiasm.

I was gonna put Curt Gowdy because I've heard him in the replays and thought he was AWESOME! I'm only 30 though so I could never really remember him. But from what I've heard he was great! Also as far as guys that I like and yet never got to actually hear live I would also say Howard Cossell.

I'm 39, but I know who Gowdy is. I have a ton of old Steeler games from the 70's on DVD and he's on some of them.

I am also very fond of the late, great Curt Gowdy. He was the best I ever heard. He's the voice of my childhood, on Saturday mornings for the NBC Game of the Week, and Sundays for NBC's football coverage. He announced SB IX and XIII.

Do you have a DVD of SB X? The NFL just put out a boxed set of the SBs but the quality on some of them is terrible. In any case, the DVD I have of SB X includes the locker room interviews. Tom Brookshier did the locker room interviews and they are simply PAINFUL to watch. I won't go into detail, I'll let some of you watch for yourself. But it's as bad as I have ever seen post-game reporting, especially after a Super Bowl.

I like(d) Dan Fouts . And from radio days from national brodcast I liked the late Hank Schramm, also Jack Ham was good... and heard Boomer Esiason one night on last year on XM radio on a monday night....he was actually pretty good.

I didn't see it mentioned here, but, late in the game, Nantz called Sanchez 'Roethlisberger'.

Never really hated Nantz/Sims but they had a bad game.
Maybe they were replacement announcers, to keep with the reffing?

If you need any kind of knowledge to do NFL games, Phil Simms is in a whole lot of trouble...

I have all of the SB's. If I'm not mistaken, I have that one with post game as well. I know my SB 14 dvd has the pregame, commercials and what not. My SB IX DVD is way better than the one the NFL put out in that box set. :herewego:

Brookshier was (in)famous for painful interviews. If you think SB X is bad, go check out SB VI and his encounter with Duane Thomas.

I have a nice collection of Steelers broadcasts from the 1970s myself, including all 4 Super Bowls and the 1974-75 AFC title games.

I would LOVE to see all that! A few years ago NFL network reaired Super Bowl 13 with the Curt Gowdy commentary and I felt like I was in heaven watching that. I'm glad I was a child of the 80s but I really do feel like a missed out on a great time in football by missing the 70s.

There are sites you can find with games for sale or trade.

    70s game I have:
1970 first ever game in TRS, against Giants. Very good quality.
    1972 vs Vikings
    1973 MNF at Miami
    1974 AFCCG and SB IX
1975 at Rams, AFCCG, SB X
1976 at oakland, MNF at Minnesota, 1976 AFCCG
    1977 vs Dallas (GREAT GAME!)
1978 vs Cle, at Jets, MNF at SF (the day Moscone and Milk were shot), at LA, vs Balt, at Houston, at denver, all post-season games
1979 MNF opener at NE (Stingley's standing O), vs Houston, at St. Louis, vs Dallas, vs Skins, MNF vs Denver, all post-season

And these are all original broadcasts? Also wasn't it in the 78 playoffs where Al Davis tried to say we froze the field against the Raiders? I'm pretty sure it is. Did they actually mention that during the broadcast that there was some controversy over the turf or was that something that came out later?

I am VERY glad to be a child of the 70s and remember seeing these all live when they happened.
The game you reference is the 1975 AFC title game. I have watched that game again several times - one of the most brutal games ever played. Nothing is said during the broadcast about the Steelers deliberately freezing the field, but the weather conditions are of course mentioned.

That game, for those interested in such things, would make for an excellent drinking game. The rules would be simple- take a drink every time someone on either team makes an illegal hit (by today's standards). You'd be unconscious by the third quarter.

I gave my VHS copy of the 77 Dallas game to my good friend Jimmy Allen, who had a crucial interception return that day, and I'd like to re-find a DVD copy for both of us. I do have both Cleveland games (wins, of course) from that season and the Cincy loss from week 13 as well.

I think Mike Tirico does a good job announcing Monday Night Football, Gruden just drools over the quarterbacks, Jaworski leaving was a plus, I would like to see Aikman replace Gruden, but Tirico does a very good job in my opinion...

    Ha, brilliant.

Nowadays, I take a drink every time we get a BS call against us, or a no-call when Harrison is held.

It's not part of a drinking game, just a way to settle the emotions, y'understand.
