you have to be able to do some things well. he didn't show them last night. it's not like he hasn't played on a big stage before. as i've said before, our replacement for heath isn't on this team yet.

Yeah it was terrible... It was also at guard, which is a position I don't think he's a good fit at. I won't over react to it, but I saw the guy I thought we were getting out of him when we took him. He's a poor athlete with poor burst and mediocre hands. He needs to work his butt off blocking, because he will likely need to take the spaeth route if he wants to remain an NFL player.

Again, it's only one pre season game tho, so I'll give him more time before I make my mind up on he kid. He's a Steeler, so I'm hoping he turns out a lot better than I think he will lol

Again I reiterate. Game jitters. Nothing about those throws would be considered related to bad hands. Hell my grandmother could have caught at least the throw at the 1 yard line lol

Compared to Derek Moye, Thaddeus Gibson or Josh Mauro, Beachum was awful. Remind me who's still on the team, though...

Aside from this, I'm actually beginning to want Jesse James to be cut so that we don't have to endure any more godawful puns.

I think Tomlin was ask about him today. "Time to knuckle up, this is Sunday ball not Saturday ball." :roflmao:

Best response I have heard from Tomlin in a long time.

    knuckle up
a phrase uttered in encouragement meaning: "muster your courage, intestinal fortitude and love for the American-way in preparation for an upcoming (or admist a) challenge
    of epic proportions!"
(uttered many times by one of the dudes in the movie "The Matrixs:Revolutions" during battle
    against the electro-mechanical foe)
"Here they come boys ... Knuckle up!"

He looked like he was trying to catch balls with his knuckles.

I think a lot of you are spot on. He is a rookie playing in his first game and it showed. Some rookies seem to pick things up quickly, James doesn't seem to be one of them. I hope he gets up to speed because he could be a solid redzone threat. That said and I can't believe I'm going to type this but if it came down to dressing James or DHB simply for special teams I will take DHB because Jessie was being out jogged by Warren on that punt that Diggs ran back to the one yard line.

DHB seems to really give a lot of effort and is comfortable with his role.

i think it's obvious james is concerned about being hit. i can't blame him but there isn't much place in the nfl if you don't. i saw a guy looking for the hit or trying to brace for the hit or on special teams being careful not to take a hit first and foremost. that probably won't get better in time. some may see it different but that's what i saw in 3 instances.

The one thing you don't want to be going over w/ someone who catches for a living is the actual catching part.

He's technically a Senior and just 21. He's going to add more muscle and hopefully get comfortable in the role the Steelers have for him. Lots of room for improvement, but I'd say better upside than Blanchflower or Clear.

His job isn't just to catch the ball, though - let's also remember that he's one down from Matt "golden hands" Spaeth, who after 9-odd years still nearly falls over in surprise whenever he manages to catch the ball.

    Give him some time.

Did anyone notice his blocking at all? I was watching on condensed replay, so didn't get much in the way of play analysis.

Not a good way to start , have many more games like that
and you will be back in Mckeesport looking for work. Good luck with that.

Jessie's immediate future is going to come down to Special Teams. If he can't contribute there, there won't be any room on the roster for him.

Yeah, don't write the young man off yet. I've got a Penn State alumnus where I work that assures me the catches will come. Still, it would have been nice to see him make the stat book for something other than a holding penalty. I seem to remember Sweed having some decent preseason moments, but we all know how the big games went....maybe James will be the opposite.

OR, perhaps this wasn't really our tight end at all. Maybe it was the 'lyrical' Jesse James (SNAP! Sorry Thigpen82)

Steelers Depot reported that the terrible case of the dropsies that he developed Sunday continued today in practice. I just hope his confidence isn't shattered and his drops continue throughout camp leading to a spot on the PS or worse.
