Phhth, please, we live in a world of instant gratification, no one wants to wait 3 years, certainly not this board :lolol:

JJ will be fine, I've seen enough to feel comfortable saying that. His injury was unfortunate, will set him back but he'll get it together but not before the B word is thrown around some more.

That's funny - I feel like that means his ceiling is higher, because what he's been doing has been with his body in less than pristine condition. Once he gets into the kind of shape most Steelers LBs are in, he'll be better.

I think that's reasonable. I don't know if he'll get there consistently, but I think it's possible. The weird thing for me is that pass rushing was supposed to be his specialty and everything else (coverage, run defense) was supposed to be the concern, but the opposite has happened. I think Jarvis still needs to get stronger and quicker, but he has room to do that.

no offense but I think you need to re-watch the game. he was getting push and holding the edge. he was also getting doubled some and held a lot.

Thats what I thought I saw as well. I'm just not ready to give up on him so fast. He was playing well before he got injured, a broken wrist at that. I thought he looked pretty strong for a guy who probably hasn't done much strength training due to his injury.

I think my reasoning is if he is just coasting, he really isn't motivated to be at his best. How bad does he want it?

It's a message board phenomenon, take 1 time and multiply. Sanders drops tons of balls, Mendy fumbles 50 times a game, Wallace dropped 9 million passes, Jarvis gets pushed out into the parking lot every play.

I think he is a bit under sized and lacks true power to bull rush . With that said I think if he was in a 4-3 or in a a Nascar package he has a great first step and nice hands .

His ability to rush the passer will be best when there is no chance of help , he is not going to drive his guy 3 yards deep and then use that first step or his good hands he needs an Island and if on that Island It seems he has an advantage to beat his guy off the snap . To me this is what I see out of J.J.

Is he useless in a 3-4 ? No he is not we need better coverage to allow his true skill to shine , which again is his first step and his hands . Power rushes will never be his thing just the hard truth....

Yep... however the exception is Cam Thomas. He really does get pushed back 5 yards on just about every snap :)

I'm not ready to give up ,like many have said his bull rush seems a bit more powerful. The wrist probably has set him back. I don't see the violent hands he supposedly has, maybe because of the wrist but I hadn't seen it before the injury either. Like some others have said he would be better in space but he seems to initiate contact and just throws himself into the OL and he just gets manhandled and engulfed. He needs to dedicate himself to the weight room,he needs to steadily improve his size and strength. The tools seem to be there and the motor as well it might just take a bit more seasoning to put it all together.

That's a valid concern from his college years. The Steelers investigated, and I assume felt like they could get him motivated. I heard he improved his physical condition after his rookie season. We only had 2.5 games to witness it before he got hurt. The consensus is he looked better.

This. And I will add, He was terrible in the game yesterday. I was hoping to see Moats in there because all he was doing was sticking to the LT.

I am not giving up on him but I hope we draft two OLB next year.

If you're gonna be on a message board you seriously need to get your facts straight dude or else you will wind up just looking like an idiot. Wallace dropped TEN million! Sheesh! Get it right!

Don't forget Willie Parker couldn't catch, Limas Sweed dropped ten td passes, and it's a passing league

he was sticking to him cause the guy was hanging on for dear life. I will be honest. I didn't watch him EVERY play but I do watch line play and he was far from terrible.

i with you on this. I was also hoping to see Moats in there. Seems like once he gets engaged he can't get rid of the blocker.

No offense but I watch it with a room full of Steeler fans. We were all on the same page with Jones pass rushing. On defense I always key on our right outside linebacker, usually in past years it was Harrison. To me it is how I read our pass rush on how close we are in getting to the quarterback. If you go back and watch the game you will see that Moats gets a better pass rush then Jones. For a number one draft pick you would expect more. That is all I'm saying. If he gets stronger and add some weight he may get there but he sure as heck is not there yet.

Until JJ comes to the reality and realizes that he
has to get stronger to compete against 325LB
tackles each and every week. You will see no production from our #1 draft choice. This isn't Vanderbilt or KY your lining up against.

Prior to the draft I had posted a thread called something like "Jarvis Jones upon further review." I had noted many of the deficiencies that we're seeing now. I do think he's going to be a solid player for us, but I've never thought of him as being our "Batman" pass rusher. Rather, he's ideally suited to be "Robin" and use his instincts and quickness to make plays as the guy opposite the one that the pass protection is keying on. In that kind of role, I think he'd make plenty of those same impact plays that we saw in college. I think he will ultimately be at his best as our LOLB, but to do that we need a beast at ROLB (i.e. a "Batman").

I was yelling at him during the game- he is getting pushed around and manhandled. I know he was injured but I also saw this at training camp against TEs. Not sure if its technique or he isn't big enough?

I could definitely see that. I can see him getting 10 sacks per year, but it seems much more likely from the left side.

I think he would have been close to that this year. He had 2 1/2 in 2 games before getting hurt. Sunday I saw him explode into the pocket but slipped, probably would have been a sack otherwise. I just don't have the same concerns about him as others, think he is a good player that will produce for us.

It was actually 2 sacks in 2 1/2 games, but yeah I agree he's shown very positive signs. I just think he would be better working against slower right tackles. He needs to win with quickness, and LTs are generally better at handling that than RTs.
