Exactly. And we've seen others struggle at ROLB and look great playing the left side, so the position isn't the easiest to play, especially for a rookie. All things considered, he may not have had a great season but I can't see why anyone would call him a bust at this point.

Some people will only measure success via the amount of sacks recorded. They fail to see that hurrying a QB is also effective. It's quite clear to me that Jones is a player and has lots of talent, it's only natural that his production will go up in year 2.

This. I remember a few sparkling plays JJ made in the backfield. It's actually pretty dang impressive that he started at all at ROLB as a rook and he's only gonna get better.

NB, have you checked out the "All 22" film available as a subscription on NFL.com?

Love the All 22. Really wish the NCAA offered it in some capacity.

First off no one called him a bust,
what was said, if his production does
not improve you may here the b word being
mentioned. I then gave a very attainable sack total for him to hit. Production is the key,
WE NEED PEOPLE THAT CAN MAKE PLAYS,
CHANGE GAMES. This is why they are high draft
picks. When they go to renegotiate their contract
do you think a hurry statistic is going to really hold the same weight compared to a sack?
Why do you think the Steelers are so hesitant
to sign Worilds to a long term contract?
Not enough production showed. I hope the
Steelers do not cave into a bad deal with Worilds

There definitely were some last season that were at least hinting at him being a bust already.

I don't think anyone is saying you are calling him that but you mentioned the possibility of people calling him a bust and that's what we are responding to. :smiley1:

I think it's pretty obvious his sacks will go up this season, not going to be real difficult getting more then one, I'd be surprised if can't reach five. As soon as he can stop thinking and just react, his game will take a big step forward, DL has said he is close to that point now and almost never in the wrong spot.

And yes, pressure carries a lot of weight when reviewing a players production. You don't think forcing a QB to get rid of the ball early is important? Where an interception or incomplete pass are more likely to occur? It's all about pressure now, how many times have you heard the Steelers say, "we have to get more sacks"? No, they say "we have to get more pressure". In todays game where the ball comes out so fast, it's much harder to get those sacks, so yeah, hurries are definitely figured into their review process.

Incidentally, Worilds only had 8 sacks, he's still got a nice pay day.

alot of that reason was we didn't have anyone else at the time too. i'm with wardis on worilds, i don't want to break the bank again on a LB until we see a full season of good play. up until severl games later in the season did we even think he would be a starter.

also keisel had more pressure's than anyone the last two years and he's no longer here. that still kind of suprises me.

we need a complete LB on the right side and JJ will get there. he probably would look like an all-pro compared to shazier right now. it's a process that will go on for years. we better get used to some mistakes and take them as that. not bust talk. they are young all over and mistakes are going to happen for a couple of years even. be gratful we are young and fast again is my thinking of these guys. we will be better than last year, hopefully. i'm pretty excited to see the process take the field this year, i know that.:cool:

True but ward was insinuating that sacks is the be all end all to hammering out a contract, lot of things go into determining the value of a contract.

The same people from the old board that are on this one called Timmons a bust and then here it was Worilds. Now, they're not giving JJ a season or two.

Let's give em a season or two to beast or burden aye?

Here;s a little something that should make everyone a little happier. Saw pictures of Jones at OTA's and he definitely looks bigger, so he's got that going for him.....which is nice.

We all know Jarvis needed to get stronger this offseason. This just in: according to Jones himself, he has not gained any weight, but he's gotten stronger.

I don't think he was in the best possible shape last year, judging by his preseason conditioning. His body had room to improve. If he dropped 5 pounds of fat and gained 5 pounds of muscle, that could make a significant difference. Hopefully it was more like 10 though.

Jones needed to workout with Worilds to see how to bulk up.

I think the D has really upped in the area of potential playmakers.

Tuitt did it in college. Heyward showed in his first year starting that he could make them. McLendon has done it as the non-starter, but he still has to prove it as a starter.

Timmons can make plays, but had to be conservative last year to help cover some of our flaws. Shazier I think has playmaker written all over him. Jones was one in college...can he do it in the pros? Worilds has shown flashes, and this will truly be his first year as a starter.

Ike, is not a playmaker, but does his role well. Allen has shown inconsistency, but has shown he can make some plays, now he just needs to do it regularly. Troy....yeah, we know about him when healthy and able to roam. Mitchell should allow him to roam more than he has in recent years and has a knack for making plays.

I am really excited about our D.

Heyward didn't start all year. McLendon just finished his first. Tuitt, if he starts is a rookie. Jones was an intermittent starter. Shazier is a rookie who will start. Worilds has not been a full time starter yet. Same with Allen at CB. I am excited about our youth and excited to see young role players also make contributions.

This team is going to be better, but we need to get off to a decent start if at all possible.

    Agreed.

Like what they've done to our D and the direction it's going. Like offense, it all starts up front and Ike will look better when there's constant pressure on the QB.

I think Mitchell was the right move too.

Woops, glossed over this question. No, but it may be something I look into. Definitely interesting. Like TTF said, I wish they had it for the NCAA, although there is more than enough people putting this type of tape on the internet for guys like me to enjoy.

According to some recent articles, Jones weights the same exact thing he did last year, 244lbs I think. Which is where the Steelers want him. I would think if you're getting stronger that you are getting bigger but I'm not a strength and conditioning coach

He was not exactly chiseled from marble before. The one knock on him coming out of college was that he wasn't a beast in the weight room. He wasn't the type to work out if he didn't have to. He wasn't maximizing his potential; he was just coasting on natural ability. That's why he tested so poorly and fell to us. Remember when Ziggy went through that transformation? Overall he only gained like 2 pounds, but he lost something like 20 pounds of fat and added 22 pounds of muscle. Jarvis could have done the same thing, on a smaller scale. Maybe it was only a 5 pound switch instead of a 20 pound switch, but that will still help - and not just his strength, but also his quickness.

He says he's stronger, and there are still a few months to go.
