Our old pal Markus Wheaton is ranked among the worst receivers! lololol

But no, I don't think James is that bad at all. It has more to do with him not really getting the ball much.

I just want to say this. I don't hate the guy, but the fact that he gets open imo of course is...

    1. we have other deadly weapons that need to be covered

    2. teams know james will make that catch but is YAC is bad lol so they don't need to worry much

I personally feel Vance (if healthy) can bring so much more. Great blocker, stretches the field, and was starting to catch more.
Here is to hoping(not holding my breath) vance can stay healthy and help us on our quest for 7. James and Vance used together will go a long way, especially because brown will either be hurt or neutered.

Perhaps not you, but it is absolutely part of why he gets so much slack.

And Miller wasn't Gronkowski, but that seam route was part of his route tree and it really isn't for James. You are like a lot of folks in that you forget how athletic Miller was when he arrived.

There are plenty of targets available for a tight end in the Pittsburgh offense. James just isn't good enough to get open that often. I don't know why people have such a problem with admitting that he is among the 10 worst starting tight ends in the league. He's not the starter. He's filling in for the starter because McDonald can't stay healthy.

I refuse to even talk anymore about VM until he can prove he can stay on the field for an entire game.

JJ had his best game of the year two weeks ago against the ravens, 12 targets 10 catches for 97 yards, he needs to be more physical than he has shown, he has 41 receptions on 60 targets for the year but only 3 TDs and one TD stolen by the refs.....

He simply wasnt used a lot in that regard to consider him that type of TE, he wasnt. If he was why wouldnt they use him a lot more down field? They needed him to stay in and block? Ok, thats fair but if you have a down field weapon you figure out how to use it.

3 years of 5 catches or less for 20+ yards
6 years of 8 catches or less for 20+ yards
1 year with 9 catches of 20+ yards
1 year of 11 catches of 20+ yards.

That falls short of guys like Gronk, Graham, Gates, Kelce who average 14 or more a year. Those are guys you use as a weapon down field. Heath wasnt fast enough to exploit defenses on a consistent basis in that manner.

There arent plenty of targets for a TE when you figure in AB, Bell and JuJu. Or to put it another way, they arent going to take touches away from star players for a "mediocre" talent at TE that people are trying to pass JJ off as.

The guy catches better then people give him credit for and has put up decent numbers so far for a 4th rd pick in his 3rd year and who has also come up with some big catches. Unfortunately, Sunday couldnt be added to that list. Although it should have been IMO.

Where you are wrong is Miller's speed. He was fast enough to make plays down the field early in his career. He wasn't Gronkowski, Gates or Kelce. Graham is a different type of animal because he's more of a big receiver and not much of a blocker.

Miller wasn't going to blow you away with his 40 time, but he was fluid and he got a quick release at the snap, two things you won't see in a description of James.

The point is that Miller was capable of those plays and James isn't. Even his longer receptions tend to be shorter ones where he has room to run. He has very limited upside and the Steelers know it, which is why they traded for an upgrade in the preseason. Unfortunately, the upgrade can't stay on the field.

Have to agree to disagree. He was so fast that he only had 3 catches for 20+ yards in his second season.

I never said James could do that but he can be a good safety valve for Ben and has been proving to do so.

I dont think he will get the opportunity to be the long term starter because they will probably continue to look for a field stretching TE type and I have no problem with that but think James will continue to do a good job until they find one. Could be Vance if he stays healthy.

His hands are not "good" and they never were. On a scale from 1-10, I give him a 5.

He's an average player. Has good hands. Seems to run good routes. Uses his body pretty well. below average speed. Poor blocker.

Every since PSU ball, he has made bad drops, and is not a dominant blocker, at all. He hasn't really improved all that much. He still drops balls tossed right into his mitts, and Ben will lose confidence once a player does that. He is not pure trash, but he isn't all that great either; not a security blanket like Heath was.

When considering reception production only, JJ is 17th.

    http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...experience=&tabSeq=1&qualified=true&Submit=Go

Now, factor in he has one of the top 5 QBs and offenses around him, others lower than him, if on this team, could outproduce him. Then consider his "average" blocking ability, and he may not deserve bottom 5 status, but he's not all that higher up.

Some of the players listed below him, will soon outproduce him, such as OJ Howard, Charles Clay and Njoku.

He is not pure rubbish, but I feel we could use an upgrade at 1 TE. If Green could have stayed in one piece, we saw how much more productive a TE like him would do compared to JJ. If we had a top 10 TE and could run seem routes down the middle, this O would be unstoppable.

Can't have pro bowlers at every position. I think our TE corp. is sufficient. Better worry about ILB, safety position before the TE position and especially QB position must be looked at this upcoming draft.

I have always said James is a great tight end. Y'all wouldn't say he wasn't great if the lying f^%$#@!$^*()ing refs had stuck with the correct call

The Outlaw is an average TE, not a team's #1, but a solid #2 who can start and not have a huge dropoff in production from our starter. (whoever that is). But with Bell and AB how much production is the TE really going to get? If Bell leaves or a WR goes down on a season ender, then more passes will be headed towards the TE group. Right now the TEs are just side dishes to the main course. Of course he'll be ranked near the bottom.

Can JJ be upgraded? of course. Can you still win games with JJ starting? Yes imo. I'm sure they'll add to the TE group with the draft though, especially if McDonald is racking up his UPMC bonus points.

without arguing its merits, this was on Bleacher Report, right? Since when (and I'm not being sarcastic here no matter how it sounds)- has Bleacher Report been any kind of a reputable source? Last I knew, it was basically a fanboy site, with its writers being the types who post on team message boards...
