Not that they were stars but Foote and Randel El and Plaxico and Spaeth.

Actually, I'd count Burress. His best days came after he left Pittsburgh, but he was still a star. Not the best player in the league at one point like Harrison (again, that's somehow a knock on Harrison??), but he was a star, brought back to Pittsburgh for little money to be a role player at the end of his career.

For whatever reason, steelersrule6 thinks it's different because Harrison was better, "a star." I don't exactly see the difference. It's rare that any player goes back to his home team, let alone a star player, let alone at age 36, but then again, it rarely makes sense to do so. Why would Peyton Manning want to go back to the Colts right now? Would they even want him? Could they afford him? That idea makes so little sense that it's almost gibberish. Harrison to the Steelers as a backup, though, makes all kinds of sense, for the reasons outlined a bunch of times in this thread. "The Steelers have never signed a 36 year old former DPOY named James Harrison before" is not even an argument. Just more gibberish.

Whoa WHoa WHOA!!! I thought the numbers don't lie but I guess if you are Arthur Moats they do. Now wait I know what you are going to say he played out of position and with 3 different coaches :hmmm: hmmm where have I heard that before for? Oh yeah from people taking about Harrison and I think you responded with make all the excuses you want but the stats don't lie. So yep he should be a competent backup you know who else would be James Harrison.

That's the same excuse you guys made for Harrison with the Bengals last season being out of position.

I know and you are making it for Moats so apparently it is valid then?

The NFL is a young man's game, who cares if Harrison won a DOY years ago. Hines Ward was a Super Bowl MVP and begged for his job and the Steelers still cut him. Stop living in the past with former star players it's time to move on.

It doesn't matter what us fans think, the Steelers front office at the moment agrees with me. I can do this all day crush you guys on the message board. I just don't see them signing Harrison unless they have a rash of injuries at OLB.

I would like to point out that the Steelers have not been to the playoffs since Ward retired. Some fans see young teams like the Seahawks dominate and assume that all players should be maximum age mid-twenties in order for a team to be successful. While young talent is groomed into stars, it doesn't always mean that if you are young, you are better.

There are a bunch of perennial young teams out there that suck, like the Jags and Raiders and Browns and Bills and Rams. I'd rather not be stuck in perennial suckiness just because we constantly overhaul the roster with young unproven players.

That all said, James Harrison brings more to the team in terms of play, experience, and leadership (his presence/leading by example), and knowledge than any of our backup OLBs currently on the team. ]

If Manning lost his arm strength and other abilities to be a full time starter but still wanted to play (for minimum salary), would you cut him because he was old and washed up or keep him to be your backup QB?

Wow that is arrogance first to claim the front office agrees with you and then to say you are crushing us. You have no idea what the front office believes but sure you can say they agree with you because you hold a certain view. Heck I said the sun would rise today so obviously the universe agrees with me. Next in order to crush us you would have to make a response that isn't the message board equivalent of I'm rubber and you're glue. I'd be happy to concede the point if you offered something better than younger and faster is better especially when they tried younger and faster last season and still didn't have the numbers in turnovers, sacks, hurries, QB pressures, and most importantly WINS that they had when Harrison was here at even half strength. Do that and maybe just maybe you will come close to possibly crushing us.

 Talk about delusions of grandeur, you haven't crushed anyone, your only point has been age while myself and several others have made a strong argument for why he should be brought back for a season.

If you want to try and "crush" someone, go back with a rebuttal to Snacks argument that you face palmed on. Someone got crushed there alright but wasn't Snack.

I'm crushed. how will I go on? I'm an old fan, the younger fans are so much quicker to the restroom and hotdog stand. I may have to just stay home and root for the cardinals now.:kemo::cool:

I'm still waiting for a answer how is a 36 yr old OLB going to drop into coverage. Harrison couldn't cover in 2012 with the Steelers. FWIW Ed Bouchette reported a couple of months ago that he was told that a decision maker in the front office said they didn't want Harrison back after he turned down their offer and went to the Bengals last year, so all this is probably a moot point.

So, Ed Bouchette reported about what one anonymous guy said over a year ago, which for all we know only applied to that season (when they were looking at him to start, and for starter money). That's worth about as much as any of your posts in this thread.

Harrison wouldn't have to be running with Vernon Davis down the seam. They could give him easier assignments, like they did with Woodley for so many years (hell, I bet Harrison at 36 is better in coverage than Woodley right now). We have Timmons and Shazier, who have the potential to be the best coverage ILBs in the league. Even Worilds is very athletic for an OLB. James'd mostly just have to bounce out into the flat once in awhile, which would be a piece of cake for him. And since we're talking about him as a #3, that would be barely any snaps anyway.

That's the word! Thanks, it was bugging me.

Didn't Colbert way he wasn't shutting on the door on Harrison coming back. Douchette was probably talking to the guy who takes out the trash at Heinz field

Apparently being snide, obnoxious and trying hard to not play well with others is "crushing" people. Who knew it was as simple as that?

training camp fever is taking over the site. let's see what happens with what we got. it could be pretty awesome. I think moats can handle it. he's got something to prove too. we don't even know about the starters yet, so the 3-4 guys all have competition. let the chips fall where they may. we may not need JH I hope. maybe we have the newest best 4 in the league, already here. a couple more days guys.:smiley1::cool:

Ok I'll play or at least continue the discussion about someone on the team lets talk about Moats. I do you expect a guy who has played two different positions in the NFL in 4 years with a variety of responsibilities to step in a be a productive member of this team? He had 54 combined tackles last year , 30 solo and 24 assisted, 0 sacks, a big goose egg and no passes defended in 16 games. in comparasion Jason Worilds played 15 games had 63 combined tackles, 43 solo and 20 assisted, 8 sacks and 1 pass defended that he parleyed into a one year deal netting him close to ten million dollars. Just for a MLB comparison Timmons had 3 sacks and 86 tackles playing in 16 games so the drop off here for Moats is very very steep and yet this is the guy you want as a backup
