Sounds like JC has played his last snap as a Steeler. No surprise here.

Now get rid of Jaylen Samuels, a waste of a roster spot.

It’s a pity, he could have been really good but just couldn’t stay healthy. One of the good guys. Hope he lands on his feet wherever his career takes him.

If his market is cool I would not be averse to having him back in a smaller role. He is a decent pass protector and I’m sure Canada could scheme plenty of stuff that doesn’t require him to be the workhorse. He has value, just not as a bell cow back.

And Derek Watt, another wasted roster spot. MT wouldn't know how to use a FB even if it had the word Caterpillar written on it's jersey.

I actually think he can be a good RB in the right system ...IMO if he lands with a Power Scheme or a zone read scheme he may have a very good career .. His average went way up the game Dobbs played so if he can stay Healthy I think it is best for him.. With Ben at QB you really don't need RB'S ...We should only dress 1 on gameday if we only going to run 10 times...

Very hard to use a FB when in the gun , but I have seen some Teams line the I up over the Guard/Tackle area lately ..I like that wrinkle but the Steelers cant run it because Ben can't get over to hand it off in time ,the RB would have to wait and the hole would already be closed...

Honestly, the FB position is a dying one. And by dying I mean already dead, most teams do not even carry one on the roster.

Letting 2 RBs go doesn't change much yet, unless they were the #1 issue. More like shows your hand.
Should have packaged them up with Haskins and traded for some Picks, someone is dumb enough.

I honestly don't think Conner gets much interest. Especially with his injury history. He'll probably be out of football within 2 years.

I honestly think he's better than most people. I think , play calling, the Oline , and tie in his injuries = what we saw.

I wish JC well. Seems like a great human being. He just didn't work out here as a RB1. I wish him all the best.

2018 he was very good, 2019 injured, 2020 terrible line and no effort to run.

I think he is a good RB but they can do better. Plus his injury history makes him too much of a risk.

The purge is just starting, more will becoming. Testing FA and
getting what you want doesn't always work out. Who knows JC maybe
be back with the Steelers, of course behind Najee. :hehehe:

If play action was used and a power running attack, you know, a balanced offense then their would be a need. Even Crusher Kreider used to catch passes out of the backfield. Its called utilization of more then 10 plays. Also its hard to utilize out of the gun in which Ben loves.

Let's see what Canada does. Also, don't forget it was Canada coaching McFarland at Maryland in 2018 when he went off.

When a lot of folks comment on Conner, it seems to me that they look at him solely as a feature back and say he’s not good enough and/or cannot stay healthy. Conner can have a very solid career as a 3rd down back even if he’s not able to shoulder the workload as a feature back. He is a receiving threat both in the backfield and downfield and his pass blocking is solid. When he catches the ball down the field, he’ll punish DBs and fall forward for extra yardage when tackled. In that kind of role, he’d avoid some of the hard hits that he gets running the ball 15+ times per game.

Not a bad point, but doubt he wants to settle for that.

Besides, McFarland has a chance to be an explosive 3rd down back. Poor man's Kamara.

With the retirement of Vance and resulting weak roster depth at TE, I expect that they keep Watt.

Can McFarland help protect the QB? I don’t recall seeing him do much on that front on his college tape.

Love James Conner's story, wish him the best what ever happens. Still could use him on a limited basis, solid block protection, good at receiving, good human being.

I think he's a great guy with a great story, but I've never been a fan of his play as a running back. It takes me back to FWP and how I felt about his play. Just didn't work in a way that helped the team as much as they needed. LB was a difference maker, it's just too bad that he chose to do what he did. Here's hoping this change can lead to getting a back/running game that will contribute to balancing the game back out for the Steelers.

It's a bummer. I've been a fan of his since his days at Pitt. It'll suck when he's officially gone... But this is a business.

As I stated along time ago in JC threads, he will get you 700 yds a year and is very servicable in a roll that he could flourish in.
Let him test FA, I feel he will get a better offer than the Steelers will be willing to give him, but if he doesn't
he could come back and fill in for Najee for a blow.
