There are very few impact players on this team that the Tomlin/Colbert regime has drafted and developed. Brown? Probably. Timmons and Worilds? Maybe. But that's it. We can argue till the cows come home about who is in charge on draft day. It's a joint venture. Tomlin is heavily involved in the draft, just as Cowher was. Based on Tomlin's responses to criticisms over the Bell pick, one could infer that he has the final say. It would appear that Colbert liked Lacy, but Tomlin wanted Bell. They took Bell.

Regardless, the Steelers are STILL being led by COWHER picks. Ben, Heath, and Troy. Colbert was around then, too. The issue for Tomlin is that there is no identity with this football team anymore. When you know what you want and need at every position, then you draft that way. Noll and Cowher KNEW what types of players they wanted. Tomlin appears clueless. And the further we get away from Cowher's days, we are seeing a football team that is being built without any sort of vision of what the team should be.

This isn't a particularly fair point, because it's fairly standard for the older players to be the team leaders.

Besides this, I would also see Heyward as more of a 'leader' figure than Troy. Troy is an icon for the team, but not necessarily a leader.

(And if I was being pedantic, I think it's pretty well reported that Ben wasn't a "Cowher" pick...)

Yes, it's been established Cowher wanted the guard Shawn Andrews but Rooney shut him down. Not sure about where Colbert was before that showdown took place.

It's a joint venture, but I don't think we can argue until the cows come home about who is in charge between the two of them. Tomlin can't force Colbert to pick his guy any more than Colbert can force Tomlin to play his guy, or bench another. They have roles. They collaborate. They can both be pressured by Rooney (who also can't overrule Colbert - although he could make Colbert fear for his job to apply pressure).

You're right about everything but that. Before a final list is made, it goes to Rooney who takes off anyone who he thinks will be character concerns, then that list goes back to KC and a board is made. There was an article on this, broke down the draft process, was posted on here at one point. 12to88 is 100% wrong about it being Tomlins call, he has input of course, as does a plethora of other people but KC decides who it is after Roooneys pass the list back to him.

That sounds like it's during preparations. What about on draft day? Does Colbert run the card over to Rooney for the okay?

Don't know what their war room day is like, wouldn't surprise me if Rooney is in that room. I'm sure KC has the green light though to make that call on his own.

Also, and this wasn't in the article but teams in general, they have a list of guys they won't touch no matter what, I'm sure the Steelers construct such a list.

I'm sure there are multiple Rooneys in the room, and I'm not too surprised he gets to eliminate names while they're making the board. But I agree, in the end it's Colbert's call on who to actually take, whether Rooney/Tomlin like it or not, just like on the field it's Tomlin's call on who to play, whether Rooney/Colbert like it or not.
