Dick Shiner inadvertantly set the wheels in motion for the Steelers dynasty. He was the QB for the 1969 team that went 1-13. His terrible season led the Steelers to have the first pick in the 1970 draft in which led to them picking Terry Bradshaw.

 

Hanratty was worse than Shiner in '69. What's amazing is Roy Jefferson was 1st team all-pro with such horrible QB play.

 

1968? I thought that was in (ahem) '69?

 

Shiner had 18 passing TDs in 1968, and only 7 in 1969. Jefferson made pro bowl in 1968, but 1st team all-pro in 1969, this all according to pro football reference.

In his first game, he had 91 yards on 24 carries. Bettis had 5 carries, 1 yard, and 3 touchdowns. Staley would have a 5 game stretch rushing for 579 yards before being injured.

Shiner was 1-8 with a passer rating of 60.7 in 1969. Hanratty finished the season by going 0-5 with an even worse rating of 41.7. The Bears also had a record of 1-13 and Art Rooney won a coin flip with George Halas to determine who got the #1 pick.

21 is meh. I liked Tony Dungy. I always remember the guys at a local produce place near me had Amos Z. jerseys on. I asked if they were all Steeler fans but no they got the jerseys at a flea market for 10 dollars. It was kind of cool seeing 4 guys all in Steeler jerseys.

 

Chuck Cherundolo was named the Steelers all-time center on their Legends team. This was for Steelers who played from 1933 until 1970. Chuck was one of many who spent most of his career in Pennsylvania. Playing HS ball in Old Forge, Pa., playing college ball at Penn State, and most of his NFL days for the Steelers. He then was an assistant coach for the Steelers for 12 years.

 

No disrespect for the array of Steeler #21's but the only #21 that really matters for Pittsburgh was, is and always will be.............

 

Sort of like all the yard workers in California sporting Pirate hats and shirts who probably have no idea where Pittsburgh PA is.

 

Bills I think are gonna be a powerhouse this season. Better than KC imo

Erric Pegram makes my All-Time Steelers underrated list. Everyone talks about Bam Morris during that 95 run. Pegram was the guy that toted the rock the majority of that season. He did it pretty damn well too. 11 games started and over 1000 total yards. The 1 /2 punch of he and Bam was pretty good that season.

 

Respect to Paul Martha, Born in the Burgh, Played at Pitt and then a short career in the NFL mostly with the Steelers.

Would have loved to say that about Dan Marino. My fun lie to impress the ladies back in the day, Dan and I went to the same High School I graduated the year he was an incoming freshman. That part is true. Thankfully there was no internet to verify things. I use to tell them Marino broke my passing records at Central Catholic HS. Thankfully the ladies never asked me to throw a football because I couldn't.

 

Paul Martha was one of the last 2 way players for the Steelers playing RB on offense and Safety on defense before finally staying at safety his last few seasons.
Martha was a lawyer who teamed up with Edward DeBartolo Sr. after his playing days were over. He became the executive VP of the 49ers and was the CEO of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Martha also ran the day to day operations of the Civic/Mellon Arena and was the GM of the Pittsburgh Maulers.
Paul Martha is a Pittsburgher through and through being a star QB at Shady Side Academy before going to Pitt where he switched to RB.

My folks and younger brother just moved to California outside Sacramento in Elk Grove. When my mom texted they made it on Sunday night I pulled up Google maps to get an idea of where they were. I texted her back and said you do realize you are right next to Pittsburg CA right lol

 

Grisham I really forgot but look at that score 20-20 against the Ravens halfway through the 4th. We must have been sweating that out. Wonder who won???

 

My Dad and I had Pitt season tickets for the 1963 season when Paul Martha played and they went 9-1 with only loss to Roger Staubach's Navy team mid-season. Navy won the National Championship as I recall and Pitt finished ranked #4 in the US but lost out to any Bowl invite - back when there were only a hand full of Bowl games (all played on New Years Day) and they wanted a major game invite and waited too long and were passed over. Nothing to brag about and lots of misery until the Tony Dorsett and Johnny Majors led 12-0 1976 National Championship team.
