I do remember Clendon Thomas (around the time of the charge up San Juan Hill) always liked that name Clendon. Surrounded with fascinating player names like Myron Pottios, Ernie Stautner, Big Daddy Lipscomb and John Henry Johnson. Not very good teams back then but some individually talented players and I cherished each of their football cards.

 

Only 3 Steelers were ever named Pro Bowl MVP. You just named 2 of them, Ernie Stautner and Big Daddy Lipscomb. The other one was also a defensive player-Mel Blount.

I liked Thomas everett. I wish we could have kept him. He won a SB with the cowpokes. One tough dude.

 

The 1990s should have had one or two more Super Bowl appearances. So many good players were allowed to leave for free agency. Heinz Field was about 6 years too late. The extra revenue might have allowed the team to keep players like Searcy, Thigpen, Rod Woodson, Chad Brown, Everett, etc.

 

Who was voted the team MVP for the Steelers in 1974? Joe Greene? Franco? Bradshaw? Mel Blount? Actually it was Glen Edwards. A year later in Superbowl X, Edwards picked off Roger Staubach in the endzone on the last play of the game to seal the win. During his career he had 39 interceptions and recovered 13 fumbles. His nickname was "Pine" because his teammates said that he laid the wood on whoever he tackled. Not a HOF player but a very important cog in the Steelers first 2 Superbowl wins.

 

In the picture Willie Williams looks like he beat Troy bad on his way to a great catch until you see that third arm.

Great thread but I think we all can agree, can't wait until it's over.

By the way I'm saying it now, we are beating the Bills in week 1. I just got a strange hunch about that game.

Brady Keys was an All- Pro CB for the Steelers in 1966 but did much more with his life after that. His dream was to start and own a fried chicken franchise called All- Pro Chicken but couldn't find a bank that would lend him the money. Finally he went to Dan Rooney and Rooney gladly gave him the money to start All-Pro Chicken. This made Keys the first black franchise owner in US history
During it's peak he owned over 150 restaurants across America. In 1970 Burger King in Detroit asked him to help with their failing stores. Keys restructured BK and came up with the phrase "Have it your way" and went own to own 13 successful BK's in the Detroit area.
In 1972 KFC approached Keys and he agreed to sell out his All-Pro Chicken franchises to them. He then went on to own 11 KFC's. Because of his business successes President Nixon named Keys to his business advisory board. A great story is Brady Key's life and it was made possible by Dan Rooney.

 

Great Story. Now I want some All Pro Chicken.

Rod Woodson, Deion Sanders and Mel Blount are the Holy Trinity within the 100 Years of NFL Play for the Cornerback position. More often than not, those three are often the only three mentioned.... mainly due in part to their absurd dominance. Whether or not Woodson finished his career in Pittsburgh is irrelevant to me as I can make a case he is a Top 5 Steeler of All Time with little to no difficultly; possibly three even.



The whole "Rod Woodson Hates the Steelers" narrative was long gone after his induction; even more so now what many now know given what had happened during negotiations.

RIP Ronnie. He was a part of our first Super Bowl.

 

TJ needs a good, solid week of practice. Our starting OL needs to get a good, solid couple weeks of practice, all at the same time. And we need to stay healthy/heal up until then. There isn't tape on Canada's offense. There isn't tape on Harris running behind our starting OL. Ben's role is totally unknown. They are not going to be able to prepare for us the way we can prepare for them. We know what to expect from Josh Allen and Co. When you're damn good, you don't reinvent the wheel. When you're the Steelers, you get new wheels and light the old ones on fire.

There is something about this game, to me, that feels winable, IF the stars align. It could happen.

Chris Oldham (He might have been the original Mike Hilton). Oldham had 5 fumble recoveries in 1998 and 4 sacks in 1997.

Yes, Ike caught it in Super XL no less. Actually Ike had more interceptions in the playoffs than regular season in 2005.

 

Damn, a few 24's I totally forgot about. Thomas and Taylor only ones I remember.

 

Johnny Sample played in 2 of the most famous games in NFL history. He played for the Colts when they beat the Giants in OT for the NFL title in 1958 and he played for the Jets in their shocking win over the Colts in Superbowl III. In between he played for the Steelers making All-Pro in 1961.
