I want to throw this out for discussion. While I am a big proponent of developing a game plan to attack the other team's weaknesses you have to try and remain with in the frame work of your team's identity, meaning if you are a power run team you can't suddenly morph into a west coast offense or at least completely. So have the last five weeks been about establishing some sort of identity as a team or about confusing the other 31 teams in the league about who the Steelers are? WE have seen things that work one week and work well that are completely abandoned against opponents the next week. The only constant we have seen is Ben throwing to AB but that has been as varied in its routes as the rest of the offense has been through five weeks. Is it planned or just a head scratching yell at everyone on the team coincidence?

I think this whole "identity" thing is pretty overblown. Going into Sundays game, we had a leading receiver in yards and a leading rusher in yards. Sunday we played a team that is around dead last in defending the pass and thats how we chose to attack them. Why do we have to be this one singular "identity"?

We can attack teams both ways depending one what their biggest weakness is.

Whereas other teams can do both to us also, because we can't stop the run or the pass, lol. All kidding aside, thinking about last year, if this defense could just find a way to stop teams on third down, they can make a serious playoff run.

Pretty much this. We game plan differently for different teams, so that's why our offense looks "different" each week. In reality if we showed up each week with the same game plan (or "identity" if you will), people would be all over Tomlin and Haley for being unable to gameplan to exploit each opponents weakness, and rightfully so. We chose to throw a lot more last week, and it didn't really work. I'd expect a totally different plan for the Browns. I'd also expect some runs in the red zone too lol

That was my biggest gripe about last week.

Yes. We came into the game with the plan to attack a weak passing D through the air. THEY came into the game with the intent on shutting down the pass at all costs.

As a result, when we did run, we gashed them. It was effective.

And hence my beef. They didn't show the flexibility or willingness to adapt to what the defense was doing. We could have and should have rammed the ball down their throats until they honored the run. THEN their pass D would be weak again and we could have thrown all over them.

Instead, we just kept ramming our head into the wall expecting it to give.

In the end, it didn't matter. They weren't good enough to beat us on a bad day, or even with our playing into their hands. Was that why we never adapted? We knew they weren't good enough anyway? Was it Tomlin trying to establish some sort of commitment from the team? Or was it just plain stubbornness?

I've said a few times on here that Haley plays a long game with his play-calling. It was starting to work last year, but injuries disrupted the development. Then, just as Ray points out, the weakness in adjustments - or player's capability to enact those adjustments - shows through.

We better start scoring touch downs
in lieu of FG's. I am sure they are working hard on this in practice this week.Need to get real better, real fast in the red zone.

The offense must start scoring. Bash the defense all you want but in the TB game, 10 of the points given up was directly related to poor offense. In the JAX game, they gave up 9 points and scored 7. Our offense only scored 10 points against a team that until this past week averaged giving up 38 per game.

Not sure if it's planned, unplanned, or what..... our offense has been pathetic. Someone needs to pull their head out of their @55 and get this thing working.

Not sure how accurate they are, but I was looking at some offensive production numbers, and this football outsiders site has rankings for Drive production. If I understand their methodology we are 5th in offensive yards per drive.... but 17th in scoring points per offensive drive. It's not an end all be all stat, but it's really confirming the obvious.... we can't finish drives with points. There's no excuse, if we can move the ball and hold it offensively, we should be able to get into the end zone more. Combine that with our defensive problems, and you can look us up in Websters Dictionary under the word "Struggle"

I said last week on another thread before we played the jags, the steelers would do something stupid to keep the game close and they didnt disappoint: If not for a rookie QB giving up picks they would have lost that game, this team is weak mentally and cant perform at a high level on the field, thats why they will lose this Sunday........

Just better play calling and executing is needed. They should have ran more last week, even Tomlin said so.

This has been a problem since BA was here. That's why I've started wondering if a big part of this issue with the team is player execution.

    This.

I've said it before... the organization has stacked the offense side of the team to support the franchise QB. So that unit needs to step up and do their part. And that means 30+ points per game.

This is why I argue player execution. These guys are being put in a position to win. And it appears they play calling is not the issue. Remember, this was an issue even under BA as OC: poor red zone performance, lots of yards but not the points to show for it, everyone expecting the defense to bail out the offense.

I don't understand the logic: "Ben's the greatest" but he bears no responsibility as field general when this offensive unit can't put up 21 points per game consistently. Even when they get better than 21 points it's usually not 3 TDs. What gives?

I'm as frustrated about it as anyone else. I just don't think it's all the fault of the coaching.

Wait what? Stacked the offense? Timmons/Mendenhal/Hood/Heyward/Pouncey/Descastro/Jones/Shazier 5 of these first round picks of the last 8 years are defense. 3 are offense. Pretty much any free agent pickup outside of Blount has been defense.

I think we just had too many misses with draft picks (have had some good ones too), that it wasn't enough to replace all pros like Aaron Smith/Hampton/Farrior/Harrison/Foote/Healthy Woodley/Polamalu etc...

Sure Ben holds some responsibility for poor execution, but what are we going to do, bench him for Grad? Would you bench Manning after scoring 8 points against the Seahawks in the Super Bowl? Hmm?

How did you reach the conclusion that play calling is not an issue? Play calling is definitely part of the problem, not once did they attempt to run when in the redzone last week. They get stupid/cute/scared, take your pick, when they get down there.
