Is LeBeau's defense TOO complicated?

It's like our players have become too afraid to make a mistake rather than using their talents to make a play.

I think the play book is written in Spanish that is the only thing that makes the overly complicated assumption make sense.

This defense may be too complicated for the players, but the rest of the NFL has it figured out pretty good.........

LeBeau's defense isn't too complicated for Tom Brady to figure out he's 7-2 against them.

The problem is we are a defensive team in an offensive league. No defenses are any good anymore because of the rules. That is why other teams go for the pick and the strip, no defense can shut down a good offense straight up anymore. Lebeau is still keeping the faith, but the game has changed. Teams don't win with tough defense anymore. They win by creating turnovers.

    Not true:

    KC: 12.33
    Panthers 13.25
    Seattle 16.56
    49ers: 18.12
    NO: 18.25
    Cincy: 18.44
    Colts: 19:38
    NE: 19.44
    Titans: 20.88

Sure is a heck of a lot easier wining games when all your offense has to do is score more then 20 points.

I'll throw another concern out there. Where the new collective bargaining agreement, rookies are getting to free agency quicker than ever. Even if DL's defense was still working, it would be a problem under the new CBA because it takes most players a year or two to learn it well enough to be productive starters. This is a new era, and the DL 34 zone blitz scheme is going out of style.

Lebeau is promising a better D this week.

    Back to basics.

Very good point SE,we do not have the talent on the team
to have REDSHIRT YEARS, I have talked about this OVER AND OVER thruout the years. You have to find players to play right away. Belecheck throws his players to the wolves right from the get go.Your learning curve is the field of play on Sunday's.
Art II has brought this up a long time ago,and for some reason it has gone by the wayside?I am afraid DL will have to get on with his life's work.

just to add another degree of difficulty

in North Carolina Dick's last name Lebeau would be pronounced Le'Bo long 0 sound
in South Carolina his last name would be pronounced LeBue long U sound

so it goes to say it is COMPLICATED.

(something tells me Coastalsteeler knows what i mean)

The defense is only as complicated as the variety of complicated offenses they need to face on a weekly basis. It's not just about knowing what to do within the defense. It's knowing what to do when an offense comes out in different formations and multiple personnel packages.

This team's inability to stop the run is wreaking havoc on the rest of the defense. Stopping the run in this defense begins with the NT. The team will need to go in different direction at NT unless Mccledon develops more consistency. Another issue this season is the players gave up to many big plays up to this point of the season. Many of those big plays were a result of poor execution by the players.

Great stats - but look at why - its all about turnovers:

    Ranking on Takeaways:

    KC - 1st
    Panthers - 5th
    Seattle - 3rd
    49ers - 8th
    NO - 11th
    Cincinnati - 21
    Colts - 18th
    NE - 4th
    Titans - 12th

This becomes even more obvious when you look at the 10 teams with the lowest number of takeaways - they are a collective 33 wins and 52 losses. Only 2 of the 10 even have a winning record and those 2 only have 5 wins each.
As I said in my original post, no defense can shut down a good offense straight up anymore. Its all about creating turnovers and we do not have the system or the personnel to create turnovers.

Aren't turnovers part of playing defense? I don't understand your point, obviously with those point totals it shows teams do indeed stop offenses. Now how many of them are top offensive teams that they have played, I have no idea but defense still matters, a lot. Last 2 SB winners were defensive teams and not offensive ones.

I'm not sure exactly what Aero's point was, but the way I read it is that in today's NFL you need a defense that plays aggressive and takes risks to force negative plays. If that's the point, I agree. A "bend but don't break" approach isn't optimal anymore because the rules of the game make it easier for a quality QB to dissect you with underneath passes if they play with appropriate patience. The best defenses in the league now are the ones that play dynamic schemes that attack the opposing offense. We don't attack much.

Of course, having great players would be nice as well ;)
