Is horrible. I can't stand him. Everyone he was covering was open all day against him. What a waste of money. When he threatned to hold out a couple yrs ago they shou;dve told him to take a walk

Im sorry I just needed to get that out. It kills me when people talk about him as a shut down corner. There were atleast 3 or 4 3rd down conversions by Tennessee to the receiver Ike was covering. Its just pathetic. When the team needs a stop and its 3rd and long and you have to watch your so called best CB give up the completion for 1 st down it just demoralizes the rest of the defense and team for that matter. Someone I was watching the game with kept saying what is he doing out there and I just looked at him screaming what do u mean what's he doing out there? Hes doing what he does every week getting beat all over the field

there was one play when he was taunting a receiver thinking he hadn't catch the ball while the receiver came out with the ball in the hands , ridiculous

To understand Ike Taylor you have to understand Dick Lebeau's system. DL preaches don't give up the big play and tackle the catch. That philosophy alone irks me but that's what has been instilled in our defensive backs. That the reason we don't get interceptions. None of our defensive players go for the ball. Even when they have the player stop no one is even trying to strip it.
Like I mention before in another thread and many times before, we need a new philosophy.

I've never seen or heard of anyone saying he's a shutdown corner and I've never thought he was that good but just the best we've had probably since Woodson

Another thread complaining of our D, when it's our O which has been stuck in mud...

Apparently the D needs to pitch a shut out to escape any criticism. And even then if they do it without turnovers, someone will complain about that. Freaking joke. Defense isn't a problem, DL isn't the problem. Never is with this team.

It's pretty apparent that we need some help. William Gay actually deflected 2 balls into the air that could've been picked. He was our "best" CB Sunday. I can't believe I just wrote that but it's true.

Okay, with all due respect, we all know what Ike is and what he isn't. I will still take him over someone afraid to put their neck on the line when it gets physical. He's earned his spot, and the results show it...even if he'll never be a "shut-dwon corner". That window has probably closed anyway.

However, the point was made well earlier regarding DL's defensive scheme. Ike doesn't have to be a super hero....as long as we are getting to the QB. The whole zone blitz fire schemes only work when the QB has a few seconds to make a choice. To ask these guys to cover for a period of time is why Ben picks apart D's with his prolonging of holding the ball. Many QB's can't handle it, but there still needs to be pressure to provide the catalyst.

I'm not so concerned with our CB's.... and I know many of you will challenge me on this. That's okay. I AM concerned with our dline and backers getting to the QB and forcing quick decisions. Bring on Jarvis...that's all I have to say....not to mention Ziggy and co. bringing the wood.

We love to criticize the CB's, but we have to realize that you can't have a probowl player at every position, and Dick's defense is about pressure causing poor decisions ... so we can live with average CB's and leverage Clark, and especially, Troy's talent.

There is a method to this madness folks... whether we like it or not.

We gave up 117 yards passing and ZERO touchdowns. This is during a week when the NFL set records for passing yards (others teams - excluding the Titans but including the Steelers averaged 258 yards and 2 TDs).

This offense could get shut out the entire season and people would complain that the defense didn't outscore the other team's offense.

I saw that. I commented on it in the game thread. Pretty pathetic when you give up a big gain and you're STILL trash talking! SMH

You mean you'd rather give up the big play and not tackle the catch? What do you mean that philosophy irks you?

I think I know what you're saying. It seems that the Steelers D over the last couple of years has gotten pretty conservative. It's almost like it's playing not to lose instead of to win. I remember a time that DL used to throw all of these exotic blitz packages out there every game and that generated sacks and turnovers. It seems now that other teams have DL's number. Every time he dials up a blitz it seems that they easily have it blocked and give their QB plenty of time to pick our D apart. Who cares if you tackle the catch and don't give up the big play. If the other team is completing 8-15 yard passes all the way up the field, what does it matter? But we're tackling the catch and not giving up the big play! Yeah, right!

    THIS x2

Every season people take a poke at Ike. Like BigSteel I have never heard anyone say media or otherwise Ike was considered a shutdown corner.

Ike is very good at the job he is given based on DLs scheme. He has hands of stone but he has kept the best receiver from opposing teams having a field day come game day.

Lets just leave it at that.

That's part of what I mean. It seems like it's a passive, bend but don't break approach instead of aggressively going after the ball. When was the last time you seen someone intentionally try to strip the ball. I never here them talk about going to get turnovers and causing fumbles. I listened to Deion Sanders and he said that when they through at him it was an insult. He believed the ball was meant for him. The CB for the Bears intentionally goes for the strip. That type of mentally is what we need.
But I think we don't have that because Lebeau preaches "tackle the catch" and don't give up the "big play" Which is a noble way to approach defense but it doesn't get you any turnovers.

I disagree completely. I think Ike is one of the most underrated CB's in the game, because he has hands of stone.

Kenny Britt is actually healthy, and when he is he is a physical specimen that can really do some damage... He was held to one catch. I do remember Ike giving up a long 3rd down catch to Nate, but other than that I thought he had a pretty good day. I watch with my dad and he even commented that he hadn't seen Ike all day, and I said for a CB that's a good thing.

Last season I was at the game in Cincinnati and thought, AJ Green is going to obliterate this secondary. Ike put on a show, and only allowed 1 catch to Green who's already one of the top 3 receivers in the game, maybe even #2 behind Megatron.

Ike's play is amongst the least of our problems. Every now and again he goes and plays a clunker. I did not feel like Sunday was one of them.

I agree. In a league built for passing, he does a good job turning great receivers into average ones.

Bend don't break. It's helped us get to multiple SB's. So why do we need to change DL's philosophy?

Did anyone posting these "bash the defense" threads notice the offense Sunday?

People are in love with splash plays, I enjoy them too but the fact is, our defense puts us in a position to win every single week. If our defense played as bad as our offense, we'd get destroyed 48 to 0 every game.

I think Ike does a pretty admirable job considering he is always saddled with the opposing team's WR. There are things that Ike does that make me want to smack him but, for the most part, he does his job.
