Would it be time for Tomlin to go?

Just want to know if that would be it for him as the Steelers HC in everyones opinion.

*This isn't an anti-Tomlin thread* Just a discussion.

Yes, he'd have to go. With a top ranked defense and a superbowl winning franchise QB and a new young OL and two seasons in a row at or below .500- you're darn right he'd have to be let go.

Sorry, making the assumption that if the team underperforms again that Tomlin is automatically to blame borders on insanity.

Cajun - What if our franchise QB is injured again and misses multiple games? Is it Tomlin's fault if we aren't able to sign a strong backup QB? What if we lose some of the talent on our top ranked defense?

I've witnessed the 1980's Steelers. I don't want to see that again.

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. What if we keep the ST's coach, Strength and Conditioning coach and Oline coach but we still have ST blunders, soft out of condition players and another swiss cheese Oline that can't run block nor pass protect? Tomlin still gets a pass?

Said a slightly different way then Scottchab stated I don't think you can pin the answer to this question soley on next year's win / loss record. A whole host of things could happen outside of Tomlin's control. That said, if the team stays relatively and yet they show little to no improvement in performance and they finish at or below 500 then I'd say Tomlin's job is in jeopardy although something tells me the Rooney's would still give him one more year, the 3 strike rule LOL.

I think that question has WAY too many variables to answer with a simple yes or no.

First, there is the way the Steeler do business. Is one bad year enough to get a guy canned? Probably not, but it probably puts him on the hot seat for the next year.

Second, there are any number of factors which could allow for that kind of season. For instance, what if Ben gets hurt in Game 1, yet the team finishes 7-9 with a backup and 3 of the losses are on last second FGs. What do you do then? I think he probably stays.

Third, I think it is important to remember that even the "great Cowher" had a losing season here or there.

Assuming Todd Haley is the OC again next season, I'd say he'd be let go if we were under .500 next year.

Hmm, I thought I changed that. Try again in a few minutes. :lolol:

dude, we have been to 3 super bowls in 7 yrs and won 2. we are a long way from the 80's. no team in the nfl could have survived the injuries we had this yr. calm down tomlin is your coach for a long time. the Rooneys dont change just to change. that is why they are the best organization in sports

He is not my favorite, but I don't think Tomlin would be let go if they are sub .500...

If they were sub .500 I think there is a better chance for Tomlin to rebound and win another SB with Ben before someone else coming in and winning a SB.

The Steelers have enjoyed unparalleled success over the past 40 years by doing things consistently the right way. The Steelers way. A style that is characterized by stability that is rooted in steady and sound decision making. A style which does not include knee jerk reactions, over reactions, or short leashes. A style which is the envy of the league and has been mimicked with great success in places like Boston and Philadelphia and Baltimore among others.

And the Steelers are supposed to have the best fans and the most knowledgable fans. Yet thread like these continually pop up. Steelers fans, have you not been paying attention over the past 40 years? Do you not know how your favorite team operates? To think that Mike Tomlin (although he's not perfect) who has more than proven himself to be a very very good coach should be on the hot seat if the Steelers do not make the playoffs next year is Ludacris. Yes, I know he's the rapper, but using the crooner instead of the adjective is just as silly as the thought of firing Tomlin, so its appropriate here.

The Steelers are not the Browns. They're not the Dolphins. They're not the Chiefs. They're not going to replace Tomlin if he's <.500 next year. Nor will they if he's <.500 in 2014 also. You know this. Or at least you should. And you should embrace it. Its what makes the Steelers great.

The OL coach is already gone so you dont have to worry about him...and he's actually been one of the better OL coaches we've had in a while...not his fault the guys got hurt.

Aaaahh, the 1980's Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.
Now I remember why I stayed so drunk during that decade.

Just remember, it's all Steely McBeam's fault.

Did I say Tomlin gets a pass? Nope. I'm simply saying you cannot make a blanket statement saying Tomlin should be fired for another .500 or worse season. There are too many variables to consider that might not be under Tomlin's control.

    :applaud:

Thank you. I've said similar things and couldn't agree with you more. This level of stability and the fact that coaches are allowed to have the time to grow and build, rather than win the lotto, are long seeded characteristics of the Steelers organization.
