Aye. It's like watching your team go 6-10. then 15-1, then 11-5 and winning a Superbowl, then 8-8...

    But I digress.

There's obviously a bigger picture around the inconsistency. Just as a few examples: we had an aging defense, that then became a young defence. Always mistakes to be made for both. We have an awesome QB who is the opposite of a 'clinical', short to mid-range passer. That's why we love him. We had a weak o-line, in part due to transition from Hartings, Faneca et al., and in part due to injuries to our key guys. That had an effect on the way we ran the ball, etc. etc. etc. And maybe some dud choices/strategies made by Tomlin during that time as well.

I guess what I'm saying is there's been inconsistency in the Tomlin years, but it's hardly surprising.

Oh dude I totally agree. I tell people all the time that Cowher also had some headscratching games too. I can say that overall though I probably had a little more faith in his defenses in general. If I'm not mistaken, the only defensive players drafted in the Tomlin years to go to the Pro Bowl are Timmons and Woodley, right? Has Heyward been to one? Also as far as the name of the thread goes I really wouldn't say we have an Identity Crisis. I would just say that we have a different identity. We're now an "offensive" team whereas for years, decades really, we were a "defensive" team. I wonder if some people don't flat out resent Tomlin in a way for that. I can say that I definitely miss the days of a dominant and intimidating defense but in reality those days are fleeting in general. The league obviously wants offense now.
