This is my first season getting into ice fishing. Anybody have any tried and true tricks or jigs you use? Crappie and walleye are the fish of choice around these parts.

    If you should go fishing
On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
    Of a million tear-stained eyes
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice
    Appears under your feet
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind
With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice
    -Pink Floyd

I haven't gone ice fishing since 79'ish seemed colder then.
except for plunging my hand into a cooler fishing for a beer

Just be Safe when you go.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a lake ice over down here

We've had pretty weird weather here. Had a pretty warm spell with rain that didn't do the ice any favors. Going out today so we'll see.

January and February are some of the best months to fish

Haven't Ice fished since I lived up north. Like @strummerfan said....We don't have it down south......I freaking hated it, but I fished it the same way I always fish. I always walk around , and see what is the natural bait in the area, and I try ,and copy that color, and movement..Seems to always work.
I have had friends ask....Why do You always walk around 1st...are you doing some kind of cheating ritual. LoL. They're My friends, but they are dumb a$$es . LoL.
Yes there are still many natural foods for the fish even in the winter times. I wish You....
    Good Luck

I had shrimp on ice at a party but that's the closest I've come or desire to be to this sport.

It is. Right now, there are still bluefin tuna biting, if the weather lets the boats get out. Up to 150 lbs. We have a few "lakes" here that get trout stocks in the winter. We even have one that gets trout stocks all year.
I've never ice fished but, a simple white :crappie catcher" jig seems to work well. For Crappie, bluegill and trout.

Yep, that's the kind of jigs we were using yesterday. All different sizes and colors. Marked all kinds of fish on the camera but they just weren't biting. Seemed to be a lake wide issue that day.

I've never ice fished, but someone who had to me if you have an enclosure to sit in, when you look at the hole all day, it's like staring at this

A long time ago in San Diego, I went out on a fishing boat, I thought named the Islandia. You left at 6:00am and returned at noon and went to the kelp beds to try and catch tuna. One bad thing for some being stuck on on a boat for 6 hours with the hot sun, beers and the sided to side continuous rocking,of the boat, a few of them occasionally chummed the fish, and the captain wasn't heading back until the designated time.

Yeah, Islandia is out of business. I started my career at the competition, Seaforth sport fishing. I was the deckhand who had to hose off the boat after people like that! Not only did we never come back early, the office made us go no matter how bad the weather was! They didn’t believe in rain checks.

We went out on a charter in Florida on the Gulf side for an 8 hour excursion. 7-10 foot swells made it miserable. My kid was sick and lying down the entire time. I wasn't as bad but I was also part of the puke and rally team. At least I caught fish.
