with all these blows to the head of the receiver and QBs, I like to make the game less of a passing game and make it more of a running game. The league is so pass happy that lots of the concussion are receivers running full speed and getting belted by DBs and QBs getting hit by rushing lineman. With a running oriented league, I think the number of concussion will go down.

Why? Sure, the high profile head injuries may go down (slightly), but you know runners can and do lead with their head and are also fair game for defenders to clock in the head right?

Not to mention, that probably MORE long term post-concussion effects happen to linemen, LBs and d-linemen than QBs and WRs. They take repeated, and cumulative damage (blocking, etc). Much like boxers.

Better mouthpieces and helmets will help a little bit. But frankly, the best way might be to take the helmets away. People will be far more careful not to make H2H contact when their own noggin is going to hurt. Helmets really only protect the skull for the most part. The brain sloshes and bounces inside the skull. That's what causes the concussions. And even mild concussions add up over time. Take the helmets away, and suddenly people are more interested in wrapping up rather than going for the glory hit... or at least the big hit will be shoulder first.

They have helmet technology with the exterior padded that are proven to significantly reduce concussions during play. The only thing is the league looses some of the "crack" sound effects it loves so much.

    Make these helmets mandatory.

I believe 2 players in the past had used this type of helmet (one was a Bill, the other a 49er) and they prolonged their careers,

So should the NfL make rules that reward running? Should they just say that they want teams to run more?

    1. Bring back the chuck rule and effectively make passing the ball riskier. (I essentially agree that the passing game needs to be toned down a bit)
    2. Do not allow any player except linemen who are blocking to lead with the crown of the helmet, in any instance, ballcarrier or "defenseless receiver." No more runners using the helmet as a battering ram. (I still remember Adrian Peterson running over Willie Gay and in that play he lowered his head and used the helmet to plow through the defender.)

Two good rule examples of how to make the game safer, and also helping to bring back a balance between offense and defense.

I love the leather helmet idea, but we'd also have to get rid of the modern day shoulder pad if they went that route. We'd have to make shoulder pads much like the thigh/knee pads.

How much would that change the game in the trenches though? You'd have to get rid of the 3 point stance, something Goodell has already suggested doing.

Take helmets away? That's just silly and a not well thought out idea. Sure you may remove most of the leading with the nelmet, but do you think heads are not going to collide with each other
Or with a knee or the ground? How many broken jaws and noses will there be? Helmets aren't going anywhere and neither are helmet to helmet hits. Time to find a helmet that can protect the players better.

Besides if they remove the helmets where are they going to put the Steelers logo?

I can just see a player's head splitting wide open when they hit a turf field.

Never said their head would split open, but I think there would be better risk of a head injury (concussions)if your head hit the turf without a helmet.

I was trying to support the statement that getting rid of helmets is silly. If a player's head hit the ground without a helmet, it would not be pretty.

The game is faster and the guys are bigger today. What do you think would happen if somone got whipped to the ground on an artificial turf field and their head bounced off the ground? It may not split open but I can guaran-damn-tee you It would not be pretty.

I was being just a tad facetious there too.

My actual stance is: they're grown men. They know the risks. Don't like it? Don't play.

Sure, use better equipment. Monitor these players' health better. But lets stop trying to pretend we can make this game "safe." Short of flag football, it's not going to happen.

(I do agree with revoking the Mel Blount rule though)
