I was convinced a long time ago that I think we'd be better off with no replay and the refs just trying to call it as best they can in real time.

I think the promise of replay was that it would eliminate controversial calls.

But I think it probably creates as many controversies as it solves.

It's the nature of Steelers-Ravens games that refs will play a part in the final outcome because nearly every matchup is a dogfight with one possession leads. Don't want the refs' influence? Score more points!

It was most certainly the right call so we agree. However, it’s the end zone. This rule needs to be tweaked. Once you cross that plain with reasonable possession, even if only briefly—it “should” be a TD.

Why in the world should you need 3 feet down with possession in this situation. Not to mention that the league’s inconsistent with these TDs. I’ve seen similar end zone catches and it’s still called a TD.

If the NFL wishes to enforce this rule to the letter—at least be consistent. I’d still hate it, but it would create less controversy. I’m still not over the Jesse James TD to this day. Sideline catches you only need 2 feet plus clear possession. In the field of play, you essentially need 3 feet down (or 2 along with a football move.) I’ve got no issues with the rule applied to the letter in these situations. However—the end zone catch rule is seriously flawed.

If we’re all being intellectually honest while exercising common sense, Likelys catch should be considered a TD.

I saw Hines Ward (against the Pats*) I think, catch the ball in the end zone, 2 feet down and roll out of bounds, lose the ball, and TD taken away.

The best thing for a WR is catch the ball and hold it until you are on your bench.

It was the right call, he was losing control after the second step. Ans why hate on the refs, wasn't the call from NY? I cant remember.

Sad when people would rather lose.
I had to watch M. Humphreys mug our wrs all day without a call, and the refs then call JPJ for every little reason, and You think I care about them enforcing a rule that is in the books on the td. Also a td for them doesn't mean the game is over. A field goal could have still won it.

'Cause the NFL is rigged man! They hate the Ravens and are scared of them 'cause if they got into the playoffs, they'd run the table and the last thing Goodell wants is to see Lamar Jackson holding a Lombardi trophy!!

I'm always glad when Steelers win... but I don't think they will win more than 1 more game. I think it's gonna be 1-3 down home stretch. This is not a very good team.

It was very close. It seemed he let the ball go about the same time as foot came down. There wasn’t clear evidence to overturn the call.

But what does that have to do with the refs? They called a TD, if I remember correctly. And Jackson is 0 for in the playoffs.

That early catch by Flowers is why I don't want to hear about the Likely's non-catch. By rule, both of them should have been incomplete, so having the second one go the Steelers' way works just fine for me.

Yes, there was clear evidence to overturn the call. The did clearly come out before he got the foot down. The rule sucks, but by the rule, it was incomplete.

I wouldn’t rather lose !! I’m happy about the call. Doesn’t mean I like the rule. Did you enjoy losing out on the #1 seed when we finally beat Brady—yet didn’t bc Jesse James crossed the plain but bc the ball moved—no TD.

I’m objective and impartial. I hate all the rules nowadays. We have to baby QBs, DPI’s always called while OPIs virtually non existent—and what the hell is a catch anymore !

It’s possible for two things to be true at once—#1)…I’m ecstatic Likeys TD was overturned—#2)…if you’ve read my earlier post in this thread, I hate the end zone 3 step catch rule. This doesn’t mean someone like myself would prefer to lose. I simply think the “end zone” catch rule is utterly flawed to its core.

Yeah but, the call was overturned in NY 'cause Goodell hates the Ravens and will do anything to keep Jackson from a SB win! Oh God, I'm starting to sound like a football analyst........

As long as Josh Allen is healthy... Bills will be in the AFC Championship at the very least. They are built for outdoor December and January football. They suck in domes, indoor.... though.

Let me help you out (official NFL rulebook):

    ARTICLE 7. PLAYER POSSESSION.
A player is in possession when he is inbounds and has control of the ball with his hands or arms.
To gain possession of a loose ball that has been caught, intercepted, or recovered, a player (a) must have complete control of the
ball with his hands or arms and (b) have both feet or any other part of his body, other than his hands, completely on the ground
inbounds, and, after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, clearly perform any act common to the game (e.g., extend the ball forward,
take an additional step, tuck the ball away and turn upfield, or avoid or ward off an opponent). It is not necessary that he commit
such an act, provided that he maintains control of the ball long enough to do so. This rule applies in the field of play, at the sideline,

    and in the end zone.

The fact that Likely's arms were extended before he caught the ball means he had to make an additional football move. He didn't before he dropped the ball.

I don't disagree whatsoever. However, these guys are taught to extend the ball in these situations so a guy like Joey Porter Jr with a wingspan the size of a prehistoric bird can’t come in and whack the ball out. Best part is, he actually didn’t, he wisely hit the interior of his elbow. Great play by JP btw.

Anyway, I still hate the rule. Likely caught the ball with 2.75 feet down so sure, by the letter of the rule, the call was indeed correct.

All I’m saying is once you cross that plain with any semblance of reasonable possession—it should be a TD. Had the roles been reversed and this was DK, I promise you that the majority of us fans would be outraged—and rightly so…even though the call was correct. Point is, I understand the rule. I simply don’t like it.
