Coaching is tough to figure out, as easy to blame. Like the QB, he gets blasted for everything with or without any practical logic.
As a Head Coach, you're only as good as your staff but keep in mind that many a good coach was topedoed by poor Front Office work.
I have no idea what Tomlin wants to do.

There is a backlog of really good defensive candidates with a load of experience. It should be noted that the novice armchair GM will howl at that notion.
But there are a lot of success stories with that type of coach and some have served in sorts of capacities.

Right now, I'd like to see Dan Quinn get a shot here in Pittsburgh. He fits the history and lure.
Quinn’s personality is infectious, his positivity is relentless, and it’s impossible, even as a bystander, to walk into a building where he is in a leadership role and not feel like you are somehow part of the team.
But what I worry about is the Rooney's sticking to minority and a good coach loses out.

A guy that would be on my radar to assist would Warren Ruggiero, Offensive Coordinator, Wake Forest University. Talk about creative, that offense really has nothing but that staff gets a lot out of them.

If I go Dan Quinn, I want to keep young fresh minds on staff. If I go the other route and go with the young guy at Head Coach then I am going to rob a guy like Shane Steichen, or maybe I look at that Bills staff.

But it's all fantasy football for now.

Tomlin could retain his role, though as I said several times over, 15 years in the NFL is an eternity and Tomlin is entering his 16th.
He could easily rob someone's staff of an offensive mind; they would get a promising young QB and some talent at receivers.

But still, the main question is Talent Acquisition.
Sean McDermont has the total attention of his GM/Front Office. They identify and pursue players that fit/upgrade.

So how long for a rebuild? There is no rebuild.
They have a decent core of players, they need to fill/upgrade.
If they Draft of top not OT and stay along the line of scrimmage, that could go a long way.
They should pick up a shutdown corner in Free Agency and not be afraid to spend a pick or 3 over the next couple drafts there.

I guess I am saying, with the right conditions, this team could be right there next year.

They really blew it by sticking with Canada. LSU needed only one season to figure out he sucks. Why is it taking the Steelers so long? They would have been much better off replacing him with Luke Getsy when he was available. They also like local connections. Getsy played his high school ball for Steel Valley and was briefly at Pitt before transferring. Supposedly, Joe Flacco transferred because he had fallen behind both Tyler Palko and Getsy at Pitt.

That said, it really depends on Pickett. I know there are some fools on this board who are ready to give up on him after three starts. They probably would have given up on Troy Aikman or Peyton Manning after their rookie seasons, too. No, I'm not saying he is either one of those guys. I'm pointing out how foolish it is to make a judgement this quickly, especially with him trying to overcome a terrible offense run by an incompetent coordinator. He may turn out to be a bust. Quarterbacks are unpredictable. The ability is there, especially when you consider the mental part of the game.

Well it seems like after every draft I have to make the “Tomlin set us back 5 years thread” So this is assuming we draft properly which hasn’t been the case since Tomlin has had more say. Also, assuming we don’t win anymore pointless games and have a Top 3 pick.

If Pickett is legit - I’d say 3-4 years.

    If Pickett isn’t him - I’d say 5+ years.

Trading Watt accelerates each timeline by 1-2 years.

My guess is that you would post the obligatory “Tomlin set us back 5 years thread”
if he drafted the entire 74 Steelers team and trading Joe Greene would make them better.
    Just a guess.

Wait a second. Wasn't it not that long ago that our defense was made up of nearly all 1st or 2nd round draft picks and was hideous until we finally got a DB that was another 1st rd pick from Miami? Makes me believe we have a problem with talent ID and acquisition, or worse, have talent and can't game plan for it. This team seems to have trouble getting both sides of the ball good at the same time. Well, it just seems that way. JMO>

    Have I been wrong though?

My first one was after the Bush draft. Now nobody could predict he would be the bust he’s been. But I didn’t like it. I didn’t like DJ. I didn’t like turning a WR into CB and some project in 3rd round. I’d like to point out these type of wasted draft picks over the years is exactly why this current roster is the disaster it is. Snell and Gentry have been meh.

One more year and that thread was correct. We will be in the same or probably worse place than we were 5 years ago.

We could probably get two 1st and two 2nds and a 3rd.

If we don’t screw up draft position and get 1-2 pick this year. We trade back and have like two late 1st and two 2nds. Could trade back again and use a 2nd to trade up. To get like two-three late 1st to early 2nd picks. Do the same thing next year. Only way to fix this mess. We have so many holes.

I like Watt but our rebuild takes us past his prime. Of course this only works if we draft properly which Tomlin would completely screw up.

YES...Our DB has been well below average for pretty much all of Tomlins tenure...Tebow, the Bortles games, freakin Mayfield...rotten QB's who smoked us...From a Coach who was brought in as a Defensive Coach (who specialized in the Defensive backfield!!!!! )...

The best 3 DB's in the last 10 years... Colbert had to bring in from the outside...Steven Nelson, Haden, and Minkah...

Not ONE good one developed under Tomlins regime...Sad, just said...Guy gotta go

Yeah I don’t trust us getting a good replacement for watt. Only thing that concerns me now is his health going forward

K Pickett should have been drafted in second round. But we have clowns running the show now. Owner gave the keys to the car to Mike T and we draft flashy positions to make a headline and win the drafts grades by the media while forgetting the o line for a decade. Remember when we took our center and guard super early in drafts. Not a darn RB who are a dime a dozen and lets just call Najee what he is a total bust who is fragile. Last 7 drafts put us in this crap position.

Pickett wasn't making it to them in the second round. I know some people foolishly think that just because the other quarterbacks dropped, the same would have happened to Pickett, but that simply isn't true.

If you think a quarterback is your guy, you don't mess around. You take him. Also, they did well with the guy they did take in the second round.

Depends on if and when the organization takes the OL, DL and ILB positions seriously and not just throwing retreads that way. Also how long will it take the FO to figure out the coaches need turned over...

It helps if ownership actually cares about winning. Bob Nutting does not.

Really enjoy your outlooks. As I posted earlier getting relevant is not that hard..getting those few extra notches of separation is where the big guys make the money. You can build many different ways...its just laying a foundation and filling the holes. I do think we need to be more aggressive in some areas. You stated one...a FA proven shut down corner. Not cheap but necessary.
