How good would Kordell Stewart have been in this era?

    Yes and no.

On Ben’s podcast when he had Cowher on they talked about it to a degree. It’s no seceret that Cowher wanted to draft a different player and due to injury he was thrust into starting him. I’ve never thought Ben and Cowher as two peas in a pod. Seems Ben often brushed off the called plays and operated out of the scheme and rubbed Bill the wrong way even though more than often for positive results. So yeah, I think Ben irritated Cowher and didn’t listen as much as other young QB’s.

I know Bill coached for a long time and his wife was possibly displaying her health symptoms, but I always found It odd that he was ready to retire after having a young QB who won 15 straight games before losing to the cheaters in the AFCC and then winning a SB the following year. Yeah, Ben’s 3rd year was a dud after his dumb motorcycle accident and the Super Bowl slump where everyone seemed to operate with less heart. Of course he couldn’t be sure Ben was going to be a futur HOFer, but the signs were plenty there. I think not wanting to deal with Ben and having reached the ultimate goal was all enough for him.

Was that a short enough answer for ya?

    I
agree with everything you said until you included Mahommes. Mahommes is a very good passing QB who can run very well, but almost never first and not as elusive as Jackson. LJ is a running QB who is trying to be a passer. He has the firepower, but lacks other technical qualities that would put him near Mahommes as a passer.

As the Slash, Game Change!. As a QB he only had one issue, he couldn’t pass too well. Seemed to be a fundamental flaw in the Kordel experiment.

Kordell probably would have had a significantly different career if his coordinators hadn’t tried making him something he wasn’t. Pure shortsightedness on their part trying to turn him into a pocket passer

Yeah but in that era, you could do that 3-4 times a game and lead the league.

Are you suggesting that they developed a scheme around the skill set he brought to the team or they tapped into it a few key moments in a game?

It took Mike Vic to change the league.

Jackson is more elusive than Stewart. He also has a better feel for avoiding the pass rush. Stewart's terrible pocket presence and erratic passing would have been just as big of a problem today as they were then.

Stewart would have been more consistently effective, but Jackson would still be significantly better.

Kordell would've lit it up harder in College in today's game, thus making him a higher draft pick. I think he'd at least be somewhere between Fields and LJ/Hurts. Not sure he would've been great, but he would've been a solid player in today's game for sure.

Even if that were true it doesn’t change the fact they tried making him something he wasn’t.

Gailey was good for him in 1997 but not the case for the next 2 OC between 1998 to 2000

He was frustrating. Maybe I'm forgetting this great potential QB named Stewart? He had huge accuracy problems....

Hmmm seem to recall a certain someone hating on KFP for that same issue.

The % is good but the steelers don't make the playoffs every year...If they don't make the playoffs this year, the steelers would not make the playoffs 4 times in the last 6 years....The ravens have make the playoffs 5 times in the last 6 years with Lamar and overall Lamar is 57-19 in regular season in his career, who is elite

I still think he be a 1st round pick in today's NFL.

He missed out on the newer concepts of RPO NFL offense that are really common place.

Now I don't know if he be like Lamar Jackson level or Hurts or someone like that but I don't think he be out place in today's NFL as he was in the mid 90s to early 2000s.

I think the biggest thing Kordell lacked was confidence. He couldn't even command the huddle and leadership of the team, just never seemed to be enough trust between Cowher and Kordell, Ownership and Kordell.

I mean there were rumors that kept going around about his sexuality, like who ever has had to deal with that as an NFL QB? Kordell said that he actually had to go talk to Dan Rooney about the rumors.
Wouldn't happen to a million year in today's world, and NFL franchise would get sued for Millions over it, if an owner straight came out asked about someone's sexuality. But those days it was pretty taboo.

He never really got that huge support from the fan base that he could be the guy.

The playoff let downs didn't help, but he did get the team to multiple AFC Championship game appearances.

He also did benefit from having Prime Jerome, Prime Jerome was quite the force at RB, and that helps the QB as well.

I guess nobody remembers How He couldn't pass into the middle of the field without a int, or how many times simple throws ended in the dirt, over people's heads, and , or way behind people. I always said Kordell made Hines Ward into the players He was ....because if You wanted to catch the ball .....You never knew where it would be.

I'm saying people need to go back, and look at some of the plays we ran with Kordell....that nobody was running.....problem is , and nobody here seems, or most don't seem to remember.....is when in the playoffs, and We faced the best of the best.....they did everything to stop his running, and practically said.....You will have to beat us with Your arm, and He couldn't do it.

I think back then the Randall Cunningham type of running qb was frowned upon by every coach at that time. He was ahead of his time but his weaknesses in the traditional drop back passer became apparent. Ben played street ball and Cowher hated that but it worked until Ben could read defenses better and that part of his streetball game is what saved many a play where nothing was there. That became a double edged sword because as the years went on we never maintained an elite line. Now with him gone it clearly shows.

We were the best team in football the year we got TROUNCED to the Cheatriots in the AFCC. Until I am proved wrong I will stand firmly on a soap box that Belicheat was doing his spygate thing back then. We looked like an entirely different team - it was crazy. Losses do happen like that sometimes, but I’m not convinced of anything else on that one. The team was functioning at a high level with Kordell.

I could go with that, but as for Kordell....that wasn't the 1st time We seen a loss in the playoffs. He was 2 passing tds, 8 ints, 4 rushing tds, and 3 fumbles in the playoffs. Hard to win that way.
