How does Mike Tomlin compare to other NFL head coaches? There's no doubt the standard has fallen.

Agreed. Tomlin is great at being mediocre despite good or bad talent - can't win with talent... can't win without talent...

Well, he strictly HAS won with talent (SB win and AFC Champ win)... but I hear what you are saying. I do feel like he has severely underachieved the past decade with talent that should have done better. But he is one hell of a coach for an underdog.

It's time for the Steelers to move on from popcorn. It's long overdue.

What seasons would you put in the “underachieve” category?

2011- Too good of a team to lose to Tebow and the Broncos. Had the team to make a SB run and fell flat
2014- Great offense, couldn't put it together and lost in the WC round
2017- Great team. Fell apart to a bad Jacksonville team at home after going down 21-0. Was outcoached hard in this game and in my eyes was Tomlin's biggest failure as a head coach. Didn't have his team properly prepared.
2018- Started 7-2-1 and missed the playoffs. Late season collapse.
2020- You can make the argument that the Steelers were a bit overrated but to lose at home to a bad Browns team in the same fashion that they did against Jacksonville in 2017 was sickening. Didn't have his team properly prepared again and really setting the standard of him being a coach that didn't respect his opponent in back to back home playoff games and paid the price.

So in the last 12 years we have had 5 massive underachieve years, whether it was a team missing the playoffs that never should have or a great team falling flat in the playoffs. He had some good years in there too. 2013 and 2022 our team overachieved after injury ridden first halves of the season (both seasons starting 2-6 and ending 8-8/9-8 respectively). You can chalk 2011 up to maybe bad luck in the post season but the others listed above were extremely disappointing. Particularly 2017,2018, and 2020.

So it didn't matter in 2011 that We with a better record had to go in Mile High....without R. Clark, and also other backups on the D?
    I give You 2017.
2020....that whole offense line, and Qb was wore out, and old.

2011 we still had a much better team. That Broncos team was bad. And I understand missing a starter, but just losing to an inferior team with a much, much better one is rough
2020 we definitely had some injuries, but again losing to Baker Mayfield in the playoffs at home is bad. Ben was older but still more than good enough to win. It was the way we lost more than the loss

Since he had Ben his ENTIRE career, and atrocious Defensive showings , in the biggest games... I'd say MOST of them!

The team that had Ben, Antonio Brown, LeVeon Bell, and Martavis Bryant all in their prime should have averaged 30 points per game. What a waste of talent not to even get to the AFC Championship Game and to let Jacksonville beat us in the playoffs giving up 45 points and losing to Blake Bortles!!!

That's the one we played from behind the whole game right? Pouncy launched the ball over Ben's head first play?

Maybe, I do not know if I would say severely. As fans we tend to think our teams are better than they are sometimes. Those teams, as much talent as they had on offense, were lacking some talent on defense.

    “Tomlin sucks!”

“who are you going to find that’s better?”

Thus the cycle repeats for another 20 years and no playoff wins lol

There were a LOT of key injuries for the 2011 playoff loss. A few years ago I dug up a list, and it was brutal. Between guys who didn’t play at all and guys who got hurt during the game it was something like 2 starters each on the O and D lines, Mendenhall, Clark, and one or two other players.

2020 was pathetic. Nothing can excuse it. 2017 as well, plus the 2018 season where we lost 3 straight to AFC West teams to derail the season.

The Tomlin blow hards will keep defending a coach who has 3 playoff wins in 12 years. Beyond comical at this point.

i do give him credit for that and credit that the players generally like him and play for him. see last year when they all could have mailed it in by Nov. 1. but they didn't .

that said, we are not going far with Tomlin at the helm.....

To be fair, 2017 was the year of Ryan Shazier's spinal injury. That team never really recovered from losing him. Part of that was the shock of the injury. Part was that he was an irreplaceable component of that defense. Nobody could come close to doing what he did. Opponents took tremendous advantage of his absence, including the Jaguars in the playoffs. I would have loved to see what that team could have done if he hadn't been hurt.

The 2020 team was not great, and they broke down physically. Remember, the defense lost Bush and Dupree. Roethlisberger's play got worse after he sprained both knees against the Cowboys.

I agree that loss to the Broncos with Tebow was a disgrace. It wasn't like Denver won that game with its defense or a great running game. Tebow actually had a big passing day. The 2014 and 2018 teams were also big disappointments.

As others have pointed out, this team has had some horrible luck the last six years, especially the losses of Shazier and Tuitt.

When I hear talk of his greatness I point them to Cleveland.
