We got one of the best safetys in league and he is 22 years old........... That is not a bad trade........ We needed him desperately.

It's not a can't miss of course, but the chances of finding a franchise QB in the first is a lot higher than in the third.

In looking at all the QBs drafted from 2000-2017, there's been 46 in the first, 20 in the 2nd, and 24 in the 3rd.

By my reckoning the success rate as defined as having a "franchise" QB for each is 28%, 20%, and 8%. In terms of SB starts its a lot worse than that, 10 starts vs 1 vs 3. I probably wouldn't take Andy Dalton over any name in the first round franchise QBs.

Here are the names for those interested

    1st round franchise QBs:
    Michael Vick
    Carson Palmer
    Eli Manning
    Philip Rivers
    Ben
    Aaron Rodgers
    Matt Ryan
    Joe Flacco
    Cam Newton
    Jared Goff
    Carson Wentz
    Pat Mahomes
    Deshaun Watson

    2nd round:
    Drew Brees
    Andy Dalton
    Derek Carr
    Jimmy Garoppolo

    3rd round:
    Russell Wilson
    Nick Foles

    ......

    - I could outline and give insight and detail on about how the 2020 Draft does not feature a ballhawking Free Safety.

    - I could outline the fact that Sean Davis is on IR; our Free Safety spot being Kameron Kelly yet again should the trade had not occured.

    - Heck, I could even outline the fact that, even given his versatility, Terrell Edmunds SHOULD NOT EVER be playing the Single High role.

Instead though, I will take the much better reasoning on why I like this trade and why Pittsburgh's end result by the end of the season is nugatory; coaching. The talent is not the issue. The coaching is.

    Again.....

If the pick ends up being greater than 10 in the first then it's fine, less not so good.

So people are upset that we got a proven YOUNG player that has already made an impact on this team and instead could have potentially have gotten someone out of college that is unproven and has a risk of being a bust.... Sometimes I don't get this group of fans.

I'm not upset at the trade because we don't know how it will turn out. All I'm saying is that it's extremely risky, because the QB situation is a complete unknown at this point. The NFL is all about passing and the QB. Without a very good QB you don't stand a chance at the SB and right now we have no clue what the Steelers have with Rudolph or a 38 year old Ben coming off elbow surgery. Given that, trading your first round pick for a safety in a year when you're probably not a legit SB contender is risky.

If Rudolph develops into a SB quality QB or Ben comes back as effective as ever then the trade was "bold". If neither of those two turn out then this trade becomes "foolish". A good safety doesn't do much good if you don't have a very good QB.

We've had a franchise QB for years but haven't had a secondary worth a damn. They finally got a chance to fix that glaring hole and took it.

They took a sure thing versus a gamble. Citing your other post about finding franchise QB's in the first rd, thats all well and good but how many misses have there been?

This team has shown repeatedly that they cannot draft DB's, the Fitzpatrick trade is one of the biggest no brainer that I have ever seen. The fact that he is in their control for years to come makes it even more so.

He's better than anybody we would have drafted with that pick. Big picture I still like it. I'm only worried because he wanted to play for a winner and we obviously aren't winning this year. Hoping it was really about the coach and him and Tomlin seem to be cool.

I put the numbers there. Historically to a first approximation, 70% miss in the first, 80% in the second, and 90% in the third, but the "hits" in the first are higher quality than in the second and third.

Yes, the secondary has been a hole, but QB is now a potential hole also and that's a vastly more impactful hole. As an analogy if my car has a potential problem with its brakes but also has a broken air conditioner, I'm going to find out for sure if the brakes are a problem or not before spending my money to fix the AC. If the brakes check out, great. If they don't and you no longer have the assets to fix them, not so great.

I get what you are saying but Marino went to one SB. Need all the pieces and Steelers added a piece last week, a piece that has alluded them for years. Hopefully Fitzpatrick has a healthy career and plays for them for the next 10 seasons anchoring the secondary.

Basically the argument boils down too, passing up a great talent for a what if scenario. What if Mason falls on his face what if Ben doesn't come back. That doesn't work for me.

Rudolph was not the problem yesterday with the offense. The play calling in the first half was a joke. Add the McDonald injury along with the O-line getting tooled for most of the game, the lack of any running game and it's no damn wonder the Steelers weren't consistent on offense. QB is the least of our worries right now.

Our RBs can't get going because our O-line keeps crapping the bed. Time of Possession/3rd down conversions are a major problem and the root cause of it is the inconsistency of the O-line.

Bullsh!t. Rudolph played better than Ben. He actually moved the ball down the field. Guess you missed the Patriots and Seahawks first half.

Steelers are going 4-12, 5-11 at best regardless.

I'm still pondering if we find Rudolph really isn't the future...

What a waste on 2 mid-round qb's when we could have used those picks to help out other areas.

If he is the future they have no choice, but to get rid of Ben. Its lose / lose if you ask me.
