Just before free agency got underway I started a thread about guys that some of you wanted to draft and the team didn't becoming available in free agency. Housler was one of the guys many liked coming out of college, more of a pass catching TE and not a solid blocker something that doesn't fit the Steelers scheme but could have add a weapon for Ben. After two limited successful seasons in Arizona he had an abysmal season under Coach Arians this past season because as we all know BA likes TE's but using them beyond blocking isn't his strong suit. Housler is meeting with the Bengals who are looking for depth behind another guy many wanted in Eifert which would give the Bengals some good sized weapons in the middle of the field when both are healthy. The Ravens and Browns are both looking for help at TE with Pitta being a question mark and Cameron being gone for the Browns.

With the problems that the Steelres had stopping TE's over the middle last season by having to have an extra man in the box can they afford to let one of the three division opponents get him

i understand your thinking ,and i wouldn't mind add a receiver te , but others afc north teams will add a te (since they need ) anyway . i mean housler or not we should be start to improve defending them over the middle anyway

Don't know how well he is blocking is these days but my guess is, not very well. Obviously the Steelers like their TE's to block.

They are also liking what they have seen from Blanchflower, who is expected to make the team this year and still a good possibility they will address it in the draft as well. I prefer this route over Housler, whom I am not overly impressed with.

There's been a few TE's linked to the steelers in the draft already.. I'm assuming they are going to draft one within the first 4 rounds. I could be wrong, but im just thinking they aren't really going to make any more moves until they see what we end up with after the draft is over.

Problem is that's not how the Steelers do business. Some other teams do it that way and a few in the division do as well, but for better or worse the Steelers won't/don't take a player just because it might hurt another teams goals.

I think that would be a secondary bonus Lizard and I would never advocate taking a guy just to keep him from the Bengals or the Ravens however if a guy like Housler is available at a reduced price in FA I would still bring him in and at least see what his agent is looking at for numbers and see what type of team they are looking for. Having good blocking TE's and average pass catching TE's are great but if they have two of those and one on the PS I'd love to see what a solid pass catching threat of a TE could do.

I'm sure Blanchflower is progressing Blast but looking down the road while having great blockers is always a positive, I'd like to see what they could do with a great recieving TE too. Not saying that is Housler but if there isn't one in the draft maybe they should kick the tires on this guy. I know you wanted Eifert(am I remembering that correctly?) and having that threat in a TE just gives them one more weapon and perhaps something to help a struggling redzone.

The Steelers already have 3 tight ends on the roster, and may draft heath Miller's replacement this year. If the other teams in the division want to sign housler then no big deal.

I like Housler a good deal . I think he would be a bargain as a Flex TE . His blocking is not so bad and he does create a lot of mis matches when you spread him out . I think the Team should at least kick the tires . Would be a nice Redzone option to have.

Labriola was saying the other day that he doesn't expect a TE to be on our radar for a little while longer because he thinks Heath still has enough left in the tank and our roster has more glaring needs. A speedy TE would be a nice luxury though if it could create even more open space for AB and Bell.

Any word on how much they paid? Given how desperately they need a TE...

I read the article and I want to say the bargain basement price of 1.8 million

Edit: double checked it was 1.76 million with 750k signing bonus. In other words cheap and a show me deal.
