It’s not the players it’s the owners. They’re trying to protect their investment

Tomlin spoke about this a little on Ben's podcast. He was explaining the new way to tackle with your head behind the runner is going to start creating new types of injuries. The Hip-Drop tackle is a direct result of the NFL rule for defenders not leading with their helmet.

Not sure what is going to make the NFL happy. leading with the Helmet in front of the players, or coming at a player from behind and doing the hip-drop tackle?

Oof automatic first down. Can't wait to see how many ticky-tacky calls this brings on.

i think the myles garrett technique will be next. tear his helmet off and hit the runner with it. may be the only way to tackle for the defense.

What I’m reading into the excerpt below is that instead of grabbing the player and gently dropping him down that you should crush him at full speed with your entire body weight

    Yep sounds safer to me

What exactly is a hip-drop tackle?
In a hip-drop tackle, the defensive player approaches from behind or the side, wraps his arms around the offensive player and becomes dead weight while dropping to the ground. Often, the defensive player's body lands on the offensive player's legs. According to NFL executive Jeff Miller, it poses a 25-times higher risk of injury than a normal tackle.

It’s the same as the horse collar tackle. Same type injuries.

Sooner or later they will have to penalize the offense for stiffarms too.

Here come the flags. No I’m not talking about the yellow hankies. Football is getting softer than the NHL these days.

It stops a player from advancing the ball to the end zone thus giving FF players less points. Don’t you know fantasy football games are supposed to be 184- 178?

this is the exact play - when it happened, watching with some friends, couple of them Ravens fans, that I said 'the league will review this in the off-season and make a new rule / penalty about it'

so, like so many other rules changes - it is couched in player safety , in the same boat as horse collar tackle. that is how I see it, I am sure the comp committee and owners see it that way as well.

players do not have to tackle this way, they learned how to not lead w the crown of their helmet, to not hit the head, etc.

they will 'learn' to tackle and guy by not intentionally falling on the lower back part of his legs with your body. wrap up and tackle, like many of us used to do.

some of these are much more egregious than others - the problem will be the AWFUL officiating of it all.

well, that is probably what James Harrison thought when the changed the hitting rules 10 years ago

i am not saying I agree - I am saying I see what the owners might see.

At the risk of not complying with the anti-establishment sentiment in the forum, I have to say that I always found this type of tackling "lazy". In fact, it should be just called a "grab and fall", and not really a "tackle".

Catch up and trip him using your hands, or if you are close enough to grab his belt (or privates) just grab his legs.

not to mention when the defender does not lead with the helmet, but the play is so fast, and the natural pull on the other player brings the head into the contact zone.

If they played in skirts as suggested the grab them by their private parts would be easier
