    I have a question,
Going into this season I think most here felt Cotchery was an upgrade over Ward or at least he was equal. Cotchery has four catches on the year for 42 yards and has pretty much been a non factor.
Even as the forth reciever on this team I have to think Ward would have several more catches than Cotchery's four, not to mention the leadership he brought to the team and the fact he is one of the Steelers all time greats.
    So the question is:
Do you think the right decision was made to cut Ward?

Yes I don't think they are the same player but Hines was definitely done. Nobody can argue he was pretty much ineffective and could not get away from protection . Hines was never known as a burner anyways and he lost more of a step and injuries i am afraid would have started to mount. For me personally I am glad he retired because I had a feeling that he was going to get hit heavily as pay backs from his days of always laying the hits

You don't feel that he would have contributed more than four catches this season? Or feel his leadership would have been a factor? I just have to believe he would have been more of a factor than Cotchery has been to this point.

His leadership yes would have indeed been a factor but I think it was time to move on and you have to wonder if its worth keeping Hines as a cheerleader.. ya know

I've said since day 1 that they should have honored the last year of his contract. He can still play. He would be signed right this instant with another team if he wasn't so dedicated to the Steelers organization. Heck at this point maybe it would have been better to get rid of Troy who has brought nearly nothing to the table so far.

It was right to let Hines go.....Cotchery fills the vet role just fine....I just don't know that they still need it......If Wallace is not "that vet" at this point...will he ever be? Brown is already the hardest worker on the team...and I think Sanders is right in line as well.......The Vet is there to show the young guys how to prepare....I think Hines already did all that.......Cotch is nothing more than a "BREAK IN CASE OF EMERGENCY"

i agree it was time for hines to go. he couldn't run anymore. it was sad to watch. cotchery is a starting quality vet. thats the difference. he could be the 3rd or 2nd wr if it came down to it. with sanders injury history and veteran presance no matter how small it is, cotch has been a good FA signing. a backup qb doesn't have alot of TD passes either, but a good vet if when needed is nice to have there. he fit's the bill. he can still make things happen when he plays.

I still believe if Ward was on this team as the fourth receiver he would have more than four catches.

He had a chance to get a workout...no one called. He retired. That's it, he would have been knocked out in the Ravens game by Suggs or Lewis by a hit to the head anyway.

If we are correcting people's post on here I will probably have to to quit posting. As for Hines vs Crotch, it is really hard to compare what Hines did all of last season to what Crotch has done to this point. I guess this would be an issue better discussed at the end of the season. We know what Hines did, we do not know what Crotch is going to do the rest of the season. Personally, I like Crotch (ok the Crotch thing was working until just now) and feel that he can make some big catches when called on.

Hur hur you like Crotch... :D

I seem to remember there being talk of Hines getting "stat catches" knowing that his time was coming to an end. I don't see why Ward would get any more catches that Cotchery - does the OP mean that Ben would throw to him more... because it was Hines? As long as he produces when it matters - and I believe Cotchery can and will - then he was a younger, faster upgrade.

Also worth remembering that in terms of stats, Cotchery is the 4th WR, but that means being like the 5th or 6th receiver, after Heath and Mendenhall/Rainey/whoever isn't injured in the backfield.

Honestly, the only reason we threw to Ward last season was to get him his 1000 receptions.

I think Heath is taking Hines' catches this year... he is now the go to for the tough hines catches while the speedy wr clear out the middle
