Herbig is our new center?

According to one of the podcasts I listened to today Kahn told Herbig to prepare to play center this year. Kahn did mention him as potential center in one of his press conferences a week or two back. Not real thrilled with this move. The man has 46 snaps at center under his belt.

 

Could be a swing lineman type situation.

I feel like the Steelers have had backups over the years that can play the various interior positions.

 

They like to have some positional flexibility with their backups. It’s understandable given the roster constraints, but still concerns me our master plan is someone that has very limited experience

 

Steelers = Pro Bowl Centers over the years. No idea if it can be addressed in the Draft.

 

And, ZERO snaps at center with the Steelers. But, he is currently listed as Center 1 on the Depth Chart.


Guess who? 7th round pick Spencer Anderson has 400 snaps at center in college.

 

Well with all the brilliance of Omar (I somewhat agree), that would be a stupid thing to have 'no idea" on how to address this. When Pouncey retired our idea was to take a college half assed guard very little experience to be a day one started. Mentioning for herbig to prepare to play C is not alarming, but to go into the season hoping the guy you will eventually draft will start automatically, without a solid back up plan is..

 

i believe he got reps last year at center in camp too. we are paying him 4 mil. a year, if he can do it good for us. anderson as well. we do still have mccullom here too. we won't have to draft one in the first 2 rounds this way. there are a few guys that we could draft later they may turn into good players as well with a little time. i think he needs to drop a little weight. he's pretty slow.

 

maybe it is not their master plan. C's and G's play interchangeably for careers in this league

you said yourself that a ROOKIE is not a good solution.

maybe Khan Man is not trying to pigeonhole our draft.

WE used to have a stud at center and we need to get back at that. That guy touches the ball on every single play in football, has to make protection reads, etc. Its the keystone player on the offensive line (no pun intended)!!

 

Mason Cole is still better than anything we have on the roster right now.

McCollum! Oh boy another that doesn’t play center to the rescue. I know you get all worked up over fringe players every year, but come onman

 

Nick Herbig is a bit bigger than they usually want at center though. Might be a philosophy change. I wouldn't mind a center that didn't move out in space as much, but was able to hold his ground.

He just strikes me as a guy that when he gets it in his mind to move someone, he will!

Before or after cutting Cole

Before or after the available FA were gone

 

Herbig would be playing out of position. My understanding is that when he played center for the Jets, he struggled with shotgun snaps. Do we want to see that again?

None of the solutions you mentioned is a good one. The Steelers have been half-assing the center position since Pouncey retired and it has cost them. I was hoping they finally learned their lesson.

 

Hell Cole struggled with them as well. The "Good" stretch he had was when the Offense looked decent. Before then almost every key play he low snapped the ball and the QB had to concentrate on getting it, messing up the timing!

 

I expected them to keep Cole until they had a better option. For whatever reason they decided his 1million dollar roster bonus was too much. Now we are looking at the remaining scraps in free agency, players out of position, and gambling twice on a draft pick. Makes no sense

 

Really Nate Herbig? What a surprise! He will be the starting center for a bit until our 1st or 2nd round center is up to par. If they draft Jackson Powers-Johnson its a plug and play and he probably would start from day one. Any others might need a bit more time.

 

Because can’t miss prospects never miss and the player is guaranteed to be available to us.

 

McCollum was a center in college. He has been kept here 3 years now. Herbig played center all through HS. Jeff hartings was a guard and moved to center and I believe did quite well.

 

Based on historical draft data the Steelers have a high chance of getting one of the top 3 centers even as late as the third round

And centers have the highest success rate in the NFL draft

We are good at getting a good center if they want

Now that doesn’t mean he will be read to start game one

 

There is no depth chart it does not come out until camp

So no one is listed as Center 1 on the depth chart

No one is listed as our starting center

 

Is this some kind of misdirection by the Khan Artist because maybe they are looking to draft a center in the 1st round?

 

That was my point, that they shouldn't settle for someone with that problem again.
