Yeah the UPMC CEO made over $17 million last year, I'm going to work for some of them non-profits.

Doesn't matter. It will only be called the new name by people who are paid to say it. Everyone else will continue calling it Heinz Field. I know I will.

When it was built, it was just San Diego Stadium. When they renamed it, I had never heard of Jack Murphy. To this day, I've never read anything by him......

Actually I wasn't being biographical, I was pointing out that "The Murph" was the biggest slang name ever bestowed on a sports venue. After all, in Cali at least, a "murph" is equivalent to a big wedgie. :lolol: SF had the infamous "Cow Palace" but The Murph was epic in nicknames. Even better, the Steelers usually played very well there as did the Pirates, unlike when either team came to LA.

A "Murph" is a wedgie? I've lived in California for 57 of my years and have never heard that! I learned something today!

Perhaps it was even more localized and stayed north of the San Onofre Nuclear Plant . It seemed common phraseology when my girls were in HS in the 90's.

Edit: But this wouldn't explain why it was used in SD. So I go back to it being a Cali expression.

Not to mention the fact that a supposed non-profit has a CEO.

At least for awhile the White Sox played in US Cellular or The Cell. That's a pretty good one.

Maybe it was just a 90s thing. I spent a lot of the 90s in MX, so maybe I just missed it.

Will never happen but go back to Three Rivers Stadium. Cincinnati doesn't have a brand name, named after the owner, Paul Brown Stadium.

One brand name I could get on board with is US Steel, has been floated as a company that may be interested.

US Steel Stadium. Has a nice ring to it.

It definitely would be fitting. But I doubt they have the capital.

Hospitals seem to get a lot of leeway when the topic of non-profit comes up. I do not know how spending millions to put a name on a stadium fills the need to public good, but I am sure some Lawyer has a plan. Would rather have US Steel purchase the rights, much better fit.

The metals industry is pretty down and dirty these days, global competition is tough. I doubt US Steel would want to spend $100m on naming rights when the its operations are likely capital starved. They're also not in a consumer market that benefits from advertising. I mean how much steel slab or sheet did you or your family buy in the last 20 yrs?

    Nice ring, but very unlikely.

UPMC is the largest employer in the state of Pa. They ARE HUGE. and still pay no taxes.
Wow sort like all the rest of the money grubbing fortune 500 companies. Sure give them another
    tax break Mr. President.

Whatever it ends up being renamed it will probably still be called Heinz Field by mistake for awhile.

This is still being worked on. The original contract was to expire before last season, but they extended it for one year.

The last contract was for $2.85MM/yr
    Going rate now is $10MM/yr
And Heinz merged with Kraft and the Kraft Heinz Company is now headquartered in Chicago.

Your UPMC thought has merit, although Highmark may not want to look straight across the River at that.
