DK's thought on Mike Tomlin's 1st round draft picks.

I need to start being one of those guys that want the Steelers to trade back in the draft to pick up extra picks, because Tomlin and Khan's 1st round picks have been nothing but disasters.

We could go back and scrutinize Colbert. That is totally fair.
Still, Pittsburgh was/is in better shape that Washington was. (Washington wasn't winning anything)

Peters came in and together with Harris's team, carved a path forward.
They went out and got Luvu and Wagner (LB's) to shore up the LB corps.
Drafted their QB and got some nice picks even in the later rounds.
In the stretch when it was time to recognize that they had a chance, he went out and got Lattimore.

Peters roles is very similar to Omar's, except Peters is scoring an A+ even if the season ended today while Omar is a distant C, C-.
I'm different than you guys, I see things from a Washington perspective of futility.

Omar does not deserve nor gets a free pass.
If Tomlin cannot coach up the talent provided, then that needs to be elevated.
If Tomlin is interfering/limiting his coaches, or won't hire good ones, that needs to be elevated.
If Tomlin is interfering with the draft selections, then his big board is trash, and that needs to be elevated.

None of this clears Tomlin.. the problem is within coaching and GM ops.
Fix the top end, and you've got something.

Yeah, Colbert was a disaster at the end, and K/W have started adding talent, but more is needed and it won't matter if the coaching stays inferior to many teams.

Tomlin not only had his most success with Cowhers players but also with Cowhers coaches. Once Mike chased the coaches away with his ego and the players left due to old age or contracts, we clearly see what Tomlin has built. He is overrated, yes its admirable to never have a 'losing season' but he also hasnt had a winning season since his 2nd year, if we are ultimately counting winning as bringing home Lombardi's

I just don't see the bandaid method of acquiring talent as a sustainable one. By the time the offense is ready to be average to above, the stars on defense will be retired, or close to it. Plus this bandaid method is also hurting team chemistry and communication as well as team culture.

No. Still too hard to evaluate what they have. I'd say they've done a decent job so far, but we won't be able to tell for at least a couple more years.

The biggest issue, by far, is the lack of a legit franchise QB, but they aren't easy to find, especially when you're drafting in the back half like the Steelers always are.

On the other hand, I think enough time has passed to say Colbert's last 4-5 drafts were plain bad.

The only bandaid was at QB and when you don't have one, and don't draft high, you're screwed. Porter, Benton, Herbig, Wilson and a high pick on DL this year, shows they aren't just building the offense.

That said, I'm all for trading TJ and Minkah. We don't know for sure but I think it's Art who wants to keep pushing his chips in the middle even though he has a bad hand.

I'm referring to FA acquisitions as a means to fill the holes the past two off-seasons

I can't figure out how to do this.

I want to know for the 2024 season what team had the most of their 1st round draft picks still playing for them. Having problems with Google trying to understand what I am asking.

I would like to know how Pittsburgh ranks for keeping their own 1st round picks on the team.

EDIT: with Najee gone, the Steelers now have 4 1st round draft picks on their team. (Fautanu, Jones, Watt and Heyward) 15 years' worth of draft to get Heward included, and only 4 Winners in the bunch and the last 2 don't really count as they are still on their rookie contract.)
That works out to a 13% success rate for Steeler 1st round picks. Has any coach had Worse? Tomlin #1 again!!! :)
