Has Khan, Weidl, and Tomlin Been Given Enough time?

While it is true that the likes of Omar Khan, Andy Weidl and Mike Tomlin will all enter their third year together, remember that Tomlin has had more of a sample size to be shown. For that matter, 2018-2022 has just as much fingerprints on Tomlin as Kevin Colbert. Due to that, we can negate Andy Weidl from this discussion all together as he was not on the Steelers Staff from that aforementioned time period. Omar Khan though, was. However, Khan's role at that time was VP of Football & Business Administrations. That title is much different from the duties of a General Manager. Some of the tasks that Khan was to perform was as follows;

Coordinates player contracts and salary cap management for the team

Manages contract negotiations with players, agents, and other teams

Works with coaches and scouts to analyze player performance statistics and trends

Oversees the development of scouting reports and draft strategies

Ensures compliance with league rules and regulations regarding player signings and transactions

Maintains strong relationships with key team executives and external stakeholders

Provides leadership and guidance to football operations staff

Collaborates with legal and finance teams on contract and financial matters

Represents the team at league meetings and events as required

Communicates key updates and strategic plans to team owners, executives, and stakeholders.

Now, the two highlighted do account for scouting.... though somewhat. Yes, Omar's name has been on the scouting trail for some time now but he wasn't the one directly scouting players specifically. Overseeing and organizing the various scouting reports was something that was of greater concern regarding his job. As such, Khan does share some of the responsibility for what has happened with the Steelers though not nearly as much as Colbert or Tomlin. Now, if we are talking about 2023 onwards?! That is a much more fair question for Khan and Weidl. However, to answer that right now is inconclusive... for two reasons;

1.) The 2023 and 2024 Draft Classes need to be evaluated in 2026 and 2027 respectively. Evaluating them both a year earlier is too soon unless said classes had little to no impact; something that hasn't been the case thus far.

2.) All the moves that both Khan and Weidl are currently making are no more than amends for the failures of both whiffed draft classes and free agent signings from 2018-2022. Due to this, neither Khan nor Weidl can be held accountable for the state that the Roster was in beginning in the 2023 NFL Offseason.

If there are two people that can be held accountable for the Franchises lack of Playoff Success, it essentially boils down to AR II and Tomlin. AR II, as Captain of the ship, is held responsible for not holding the likes of Tomlin accountable for repeated failures since 2017. It is currently 2025 and, within two short years, will mark a decade of the team potentially not winning a single playoff game. AR II must also take accountability for Pittsburgh having one of the smallest Coaching Staffs in all of Football (more on this in a bit). While the old adage of Too many cooks in the kitchen will ruin the meal can be applied here, the fact that every playoff team since 2020 has had either a Passing Game, a Running Game Coordinator or both for the Offensive, Defensive or both staffs is very telling of how antiquated Pittsburgh's Philosophy is. However, solely blaming AR II for the lack of a bigger Coaching Staff is unfair. The one who decides how big the Coaching Staff is resides heavily with Tomlin.

So, in that case, much of the decisions have been done by Tomlin. Due to that fact, Tomlin is largely to blame for all of Pittsburgh's blunders since 2017. Colbert's draft's didn't help (he did have some hits) but he is no longer here. Omar and Andy have been doing well thus far though it is too soon to call. AR II is the captain of the ship but he isn't the one coaching the players nor he is the one responsible for selecting the Coaching Staff. However, AR II must step in and strip that ability away from Tomlin or allow the likes of Khan, Weidl and Sheldon White to advise on whom should be selected based on what the teams intentions are.

So, in short?! Tomlin's time is just about up anyhow. 2027 will be it for him for I don't foresee a scenario in which Tomlin gets extended again. As for Omar Khan and Andy Weidl being given enough time?! Table this discussion following the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Season.

Correct. You asked if the three of them have been given enough time.

My response was of two fold; Tomlin has been out of time for a while whereas Khan and Weidl have just begun.

The only way to know if all three (more specifically Weidl and Khan) were given enough time is dependent on the results of 2025 along with 2026. Tomlin has had his chance and therefore cannot be counted among the three.

Yes, but I still marked it a C anyway. I gave him that average grade because it's still too early to tell what they'll become, even if they looked good this year.

This upcoming draft will be their 3rd working together. Most of us know a rebuild takes time. How much time is a very honest and real question. Before the 2023 draft cycle, the team was under different management all the way up. We got used to how that group did things. This is different and I don't think any of us really know what to expect moving forward with this group. We can speculate and predict, but we don't know.

I think the rule of 3 is a good standard. It typically takes a rookie 3 seasons to either become part of the roster or he's allowed to walk. Is this a fair rule to use for those in charge of building the team? Meaning, if there is not marked improvement from year 1 to year 3, it's time to start finding replacements. This upcoming draft and season will be #3.

Maybe a better measure; if the first 3 picks in a draft do not get a 2nd contract then it was a failed draft. High picks are expected to be long term starters.

For Khan and Weidl yes, they need some time. Tomlin? No. Hes had way more than enough time and very little to show for it. Time for a new HC and staff to go with the new GM.
