Wilson wouldn't be my first choice but I don't have the same reservations as you do. By all accounts he is a smart man, he got to witness BA's system in place and spent a year watching Haley's, he could take the best of both and put together a good scheme.

Mularkey would be awesome! He was GREAT while he was here while working, oh by the way, with Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox as his quarterbacks.

Mularkey was here from 2001-2003. In 2001, he improved our offense from 18th overall in 2000 to 3rd(!) overall in 2001 (I'll repeat: with Kordell Stewart at the helm) as we went 13-3.

We were 5th overall in offense in 2002 as Kordell stunk up the joint early in the season and Maddox came in, we made the adjustments necessary, and Maddox set the league on fire throwing for nearly 3,000 yards in only 11 starts as we went 10-5-1.

In 2003, Maddox set the Steelers single-season passing record (for those in love with how great Ben's numbers were under Haley this year) but we stumbled to 6-10 and the offense fell to 22nd overall. "Oh! So it's NOT a great thing when your quarterback is setting personal records? Ohhhhhh . . . The running game IS important? Ohhhhhh . . . It's NOT good when Maddox and Bruener, I mean, Ben and Heath are setting the league on fire but we're one of the worst teams in the league at running the football?"

Regardless, Mularkey was poached by the Bills to be their head coach following that dismal season. In his first season in Buffalo, he took a 6-10 team and made them 9-7. After being forced to start rookie J.P. Losman the following season, they dropped to 5-11 and he was fired! Yeah, with J.P. Losman, in his rookie season, at quarterback. Go figure!

Rumor has it, he's about to get let go by the Jags.

I'd be curious to see what Mularkey could do with an offense where he actually had a solid quarterback to work with. Oh, but I know: he had Matt Ryan from his rookie season until he left after the 2011 season to head the Jags. I think he did a pretty damn good job bringing along, and developing, Matty Ice. Wouldn't you agree? The hand he'd previously been dealt as an offensive coordinator and head coach had been quite unfortunate (Kordell, Maddox, Drew Bledsoe in his final year in Buffalo, J.P. Losman as a rookie, Daunte Culpepper in Miami on one knee, and Joey Harrington).

I remember liking Mularkey a lot while he was here. I'd be all over bringing him back. Why he's getting ousted in Jacksonville with that turd roster after just one season is beyond me, but I'll see it as a blessing and personally pick him up from the airport.

If you do a little research, this guy has basically improved every team he's taken over and had dogshlt to work with everywhere but Pittsburgh.

If Haley goes I'm betting it will either be Fichtner(sp?) or Wilson. Both of them are Tomlin guys and obviously both know our personnel. Of the two I would probably prefer Fichtner since he does have experience as an OC.

Worilds will be fine. I'm positive that no training camp due to lockout and injury during last years tc hurt his progess, but we're starting to see glimpses of his ability when given the chance. Will he be another Harrison? Doubtful, but solid none the less.

"By season's end, Pittsburgh finished with the 21st-ranked offense in the NFL. Not awful considering the influx at the quarterback position with Ben Roethlisberger out."

I'm really sick of the excuses about "Ben's injury" and our quarterback situation affecting this season's results. 21st sucks! It's not "not awful." It sucks.

Three teams ahead of us had rookie quarterbacks (Washington, Indianapolis, and Seattle). Beat up Michael Vick and rookie Nick Foles combined to produce a better offense than us this year (Philly was 15th).

The "first year in the system" excuse is bogus too. How'd Peyton Manning do in Denver? How'd Matt Ryan do with Dirk Koetter in Atlanta? How'd Drew Brees do with that debacle in New Orleans? Josh Freeman and the Bucs had the 9th-best offense with a new regime in Tampa. How'd Tom Clements do in Green Bay in his first season?

People complain about our running back situation too. Greg Knapp just had his first year in Oakland as offensive coordinator with an old broken-down Carson Palmer, and a makeshift group of running backs because Darren McFadden couldn't stay healthy and THEY finished with a better offense than us! And Knapp just got fired because they didn't feel they were good enough. Yet 21st is "not awful" in Pittsburgh?

Rotating quarterbacks with Ben, Leftwich, and Batch as an excuse? How'd you like two mediocre-at-best guys in San Francisco with Alexandra Smith and Kapernick? San Francisco was better than us offensively. WAY better.

Anybody who still thinks Haley did a "not awful" job is taking handoffs from Justin Beiber.

I pray the Cards hire Todd Haley. They've taken enough garbage off our hands, here's hoping for one more.

I also got to witness both systems, does that mean I can step in and be a good OC? Now I'm being facetious here, we both know that, but I think you get my point. If Haley leaves, there's no reason we shouldn't bring in an established, proven coach for our OC spot. If Kirby Wilson wants to be an OC, let him leave for another team. If he turns into a great OC, who knows, maybe we can get him as our OC 5 years from now. If he flops as OC, then it's someone else's problem. We have a very young head coach who is still very much learning on the job. Lets not also bring in an OC who is still learning as well. We need a proven playcaller who can also help out Tomlin with some things. It would also be nice to get someone from outside the franchise, something with a different take on things, different opinions, a fresh way of doing things.

I get your point but its not remotely applicable to this situation. Kirby could do as good a job as an OC who has experience. I've already listed the guys I want but I won't be up in arms when Kirby gets named if Haley does leave.

Kirby might not be around. I've seen several comments on the Cardinal's board that Horten will name Kirby his OC if Horten is hired as HC.

Cardinals board as in fan chatter? I wouldn't put too much stock in that! Anyway, the scenario hinges on whether Haley leaves, which means he would be HC of the Cardinals and Kirby would slide into OC here.

we don't know that kirby will be. my worry is his know how of the passing game in this new pass happy league. he's been a RB coach. i'm sure the rooneys will be involved in this decision. does he understand how to use the passing game and at what level would be my major concern.

We absolutely need a established guy. We need someone that won't bow down to Ben but at the same time Ben respects and will buy in totally. It's a sad state of affairs, but the franchise QB needs to be on board. He's not some rookie or young guy that you are going to be able to mold into what you want. There has to be a middle ground with mutual respect as the foundation.

I want Norv. However, I'd be OK with Mularkey, or maybe Gailey, as a consolation prize. No to Kirby. We need an experienced OC with "street" creed.

ok, ive figured out my mistake. it's not cavanaugh i'd like but clements. wrong guy. chicago is interested in him as a possible head coach i just saw. he's GB's OC. i knew it was a qb. right thinking wrong name. i'd love to see him come here and work with ben as an OC. i'm sure it won't happen but a guy could dream. no wonder you guys jumped on me about matt. my bad. though i do like gailey. i used to like mularky, but wasen't he here already? why did he leave? i can't for the life of me remember.
