Yes, we should talk about all the other tons of football news going on now.

He'll have to keep it up once the pads are on, lot to prove still before a decision is made. Mann had this to say about him though:

"He really doesn't look like the same guy. He's made a transition, he's changed and matured. He understands the concepts. (He's) smoother. His body language is different. He's just a different guy."

Sounds like a guy who is ready to take the next step to me.

maybe wheaton is not a clear cut #2 as we all think yet. we may be talking about a #5-6 wr and maybe not. when they go against nfl corners at full speed with hitting, things should become a lot clearer.

I know I'm not sold on wheaton yet and it doesn't sound like there was a lot of buzz about him coming out of OTA's and mini camp. whether that means anything or not is still up in the air.

I do believe they want one of the bigger wr's playing this year. why have them if they are inactive or on the bench? I also have to think the same way about the speed guys. why have that speed sitting on the bench or inactive? JB and AB would be the slowest pair we have.

still lots of pairings to sift through before we get the right combo's on the field. haley has his work cut out finding the right talent and not letting good talent walk away.

They will see the field if they suffer some injuries at the WR position.

    Good question.
We had the Chris Rainey project, before, and another, "speedy" kid, who`s name escapes me.
I think Haley has an idea what to do with Archer`s speed, I`m just not sure what it is.
There are a lot of possibilities.
Lining him up as a true receiver, seems the least likely, to me.
Not, that he wouldn`t be dangerous out of a slot reciever position, but it would be highly unusual, to have your "deep threat",/ "speed guy", line up where Ward was, for a long time.
It would give the "D" something to worry about, tho.
Personally, I think he is best used on either misdirection plays out of the backfield, or as a short pass threat, from the backfield.
Either way, I would have him lining up as a back, maybe paired with Bell, maybe not...
But, I would have him in the backfield often enough, that, sometimes he gets the ball, sometimes he doesn`t.
I think the biggest mistake we made with Rainey, was that when he was in the game, he almost ALWAYS got the ball...
Not counting the fumbling fiasco in Cleve, where we actually ran him up the middle, after Tomlin benched everyone else, I
would have to go back and watch the games/ check the stats, but...
It just seemed like if he was in there, he got the ball, more than 80% of the time.
Quick guys like that, can be effective decoys, if they only get the ball 50% of the time.
I never understood, why it seemed like if Rainey was in there, the ball went to him almost all the time, when he was in on so few plays.
It`s almost like telling the defense, "This is who is getting the ball this play".
I know Haley isn`t stupid, so, I must be missing something.
Maybe he was setting up their expectations, and never got to "switch"..
I just think Dri should be on the field more, and only get the ball, on maybe a third of the plays he`s there for.
He`d have to have good blocking skills, on plays when he doesn`t get the ball, but, I don`t think he would have a problem doing that.
He would have to "sell" routes, he was running out of the backfield, when he wasn`t the target, but, I think he could do that as well.
Maybe, those are things that Rainey couldn`t do, so Haley only put him in, when he was gonna get the ball.
    I don`t know.
But I DO KNOW Archer can be a serious weapon, and I`ve seen him do the other things, when he isn`t getting the ball.
Hopefully, he can continue to do the "other things" at an NFL level, and give the defenses we face, one more thing to worry about, on any play he is on the field.
Not just see him, and think, "Well he`s on the field. He`s getting the ball. Let`s kill him."..
    GO STEELERS!!!:steelflag:

Wjeaton and JB are question marks for me.
Moye, the little I've seen I liked. He reminds me of one that's let go and a a NE Patriots or some offense snatches up. No idea why?

I know what you mean about Moye. I'll be interested to see what he can do in preseason.

Interesting that you weigh in on this topic. I can remember when the Steelers picked up Yancey Thigpen -1991-2000-/ There are some similarities here. He was let go by San Diego in 91 and Pit snatched him up. \

In the TC he impressed with his fighting for the ball and getting up high for receptions. This was of course against the then strong suit of Pit. Their secondary.

But, that as is the case with AB, a little different story than this one on JB. Those players made their case in the TC where also thousands of fans are watching what is going on too. I think I read somewhere that these OTA things are not open to fans. Is that true? How the heck is anyone seeing what really is going on.'

Frankly, I prefer to read the opinions of the many fans who go to the TC. Plenty of them come up with worthwhile evaluations. Actually I probably base my opinions on their reports.

Uhh! But it is also nice when the coaches confirm what the fans think they are seeing.:smiley1:
