We had some pretty strong storms roll through here on Monday, one of which included a mean hail shower. I've seen plenty of hail before, but none quite so big. When the storm was done, the yard was a white blanket. The only complaint I have about the hail was that it just about decimated our garden, sheering some tomato and broccoli plants clean in half. It looked like someone came through with a machete. Anyone else get any hail? What's the largest hail you've seen in person?

I've not seen hail in a while but last week we had a HUGE storm come through here and a funnel cloud was about a quarter mile from the UPS hub where I work. It knocked our power out for about 45 minutes or so. I live on a 40 acre farm and my mamaw let somebody grow a lot of corn on it so they could sale it for ethanol. But when I got home that corn was all flat on the ground because the wind was so strong. It looked pretty crazy to see about 10 acres of corn that was straight up when I left laying just flat on the ground.

Looks like more severe weather for the whole state for Thursday. Hold onto your hat.

But that hail? Respectable, but not close to the worst I've seen. In May of last year, we had a hail storm roll through these parts dropping hail stones larger than golf balls. Some of those stones were as big as tennis balls or baseballs. Each stone hitting my company's roof sounded like a bomb going off. Totally destroyed a lot of cars and roofs in the area. I was fortunate that my house was spared as my neighborhood only got the large shooting marble size. But just a mile in most directions, including where I was working, it got larger and larger.

When I was stationed in Texas, that storm seemed mild compared to the hail I saw out there one day. I swear some of those stones were the size of softballs.

Wish I had some pictures or a vid for you. But I lost them when my computer died. :(

Eek, that would be an eerie sight.
I can't imagine golf ball sized hail...let alone softball sized. :o I lived in east TX briefly years ago, and folks would tell stories of baseball sized. Their car insurance rates must be fun.

I never saw hail while I was there, but we did get some pretty wicked T storms that most people hardly blinked at. I guess it's true what they say about everything being bigger there.

Of all the natural phenomena's I would LOVE to actually see a tornado in person. From a great distance of course but I'd love to see one. I've heard you can go out west and take tours with storm chasers and see them. I don't know if that's true but if it is that would be an awesome adrenaline rush.

No you DONT!! This tornado came within 100 yards of my home in 1998.I and my wife and kids were in basement.Destroyed the house across street. Cracked a few windows in our home. Also lost about a dozen or so trees. We were VERY lucky!!!

Believe me...You dont want to be anywhere near a tornado!!!!!

I work for a local utility company. So I was one of the first allowed in area. Devastating!!! It DID look like a war zone!!!

Click on the aerial and ground shots at bottom of page.http://tunk.com/news_etc/Lake%20Carey/l ... ornado.htm

That's awful, but I have to agree with Blount. As long as nobody got hurt, and no property damage, I'd love to see one as close as possible. Got within a few hundred yards of a water spout in FL, but it's not quite the same thing.

I did say "from a GREAT distance" I was thinking more like going out west and watching one WAY out across the plains. I would DEFINITELY not want to be within 100yds of one for sure! Actually one of THE most disturbing videos I have EVER seen was on youtube and it's called "inside joplin tornado" or something like that. They are all hold up in a gas station that takes a direct hit and it goes dark and you just hear people screaming and telling eachother they love them and it's just really sobering I guess would be the word. It's not for the faint of heart that's for sure. If I knew how to put links and all that I would put it on here so you could hear what I'm talking about without having to actually go there.

I saw that vid. And the vid from the next day that showed what little remained of the gas station. Unreal.

Like I said before, I never want to see anyone hurt, or anything wrecked. I'd love to see one, but way out in the middle of nowhere in some hypothetical field. Of course, way far enough away to be safe.

Yep. That's the video I was talking about. Man you talk about a miracle! NONE of the people in there died!

In answer to the original post, ONCE in my life, a storm came thru my neighborhood, and a LOT of the surrounding area, that dumped massive amounts of shooting marble, to golf ball sized hail on us. Close to what was in your hand in the pic, just a bit bigger, on average.
It was about 4 years ago, in the spring, Akron, Ohio.
I can tell you, I am glad I was indoors when it happened. The noise was unbelievable, and afterwards, pretty much every house in the area had broken windows, and badly damaged roofs, that the roofing companies came in and replaced on all the insurance companies` money. Whole lotta damage to cars, too.
We are used to hail, once in a while, but not usually larger than a pea. This was pretty crazy.
Obviously not like living thru a tornado, but VERY out of the ordinary, for this area.
