    That's actually a good idea.

Or only include players who are about to become free agents...

The NFL has no shortage of money generators. So they can find another way to toss the retired players a bone. I can't imagine that they get that much out of the Pro Bowl anyway. Gate receipts can't be huge, incremental TV dollars can't be that much. The amount the retirees see from this, and there must be thousands of retireees, can't be much at all.

Here's a Pro Bowl replacement thought, or rather germ of a thought as I ain't thought it through.

The professional Rugby League in Australia has a mid-season game, call "State of Origin", It is basically a game between players from the two big Rugby States in Aus: New South Wales (Sydney) and Queensland (Brisbane). This is a kind of all star game, but it is a really big deal. And the players take it extemely seriously.
Maybe you can something like that instead of the Pro Bowl. SEC players vs Big 10 players, Florida players vs Texas players. California players vs North East Players. Thoughts?

Not sure this would work, but what they hey? It can be a hell of lot worse that what we have now.
