What do you guys make of this?! To me it as an absolutely atrocity and this cannot be allowed to stand. I am of course refering to Goodell penalizing the Redskins and Cowboys for taking advantage of the uncapped year and front loading contracts for future cap space. There was no rules against this and the contracts were approved as the were signing them but now two years later Goodell wants to make rules as he goes along and attack the 2 highest franchise value teams? This is absolutely ABSURD!

Just have to vent a bit but I would really like to start a discussion about this.

Does anyone know the details of the agreement/rules and alleged violations or are we just going to jump right to "Goodell sucks"? The Deadspin article is just about worthless on both counts.

We hate the Cowboys, and this is stupid. They followed the rules.

Why didn't WE do something like this???

Goodell making up rules as he goes along and picking on teams just to stroke his megalomaniacal ego? Surely you jest!

Well that is just it Scott, the NFL never put in place a clearly defined limitation as to what could or could not be done in the uncapped year. There have been reports, more like rumors, that the NFL warned these teams about doing this as it was "frowned upon" but they were approving the contracts? None of these owners signed any agreement stating they would be penalized for front loading contracts and there in-lies the problem. Furthermore, I guess it may not be totally fair to put 100% of the blame on Goodell, I am sure some of the more prominent owners that don't necessarily like Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones were in on this, but that is speculation.

Another problem I am having with it though is didn't the Bears do this with Julius Peppers and the Texans with Matt Schaub? Other teams front loaded contracts but they are not being penalized? Once again, no consistency with Goodell.

Sorry. I disagree that "that is just it". Some people are ready to jump down Goodell's throat as soon as he opens his mouth even though they don't know any of the facts. I'm not saying he didn't do anything wrong, I'm just saying people should relax and wait until the facts come out.

It is a fact that there was no clear rule stating that teams could not front load contracts in the non-capped year... if there were this would be a non issue. Also, it is a fact that these contracts were approved during the non capped year and Goodell waits until just before free agency to hit these teams with this. I mean cmon...

The NFL has no ground to stand on with this action. They are screwed either way.
1.) If they say that these contracts were not within the framework of the CBA then they we lose their argument based on the fact that these contracs were ratified and approved by league offices at the time and they are trying to work retroactively to fix a problem the NFL itself created.

2.) If they state there was an agreement that all teams needed to respect certain limits in the uncapped year they are opeing themselves up to lawsuits for collusion. The NFL can not restrict contract terms for players in the uncapped year because it was what was agreed upon through Collective Bargaining, now they are working behind the backs of the players to limit incomes.

They also failed to recognize that the Bears did the same thing with J. Peppers contract, yet they are not being dsciplined.

EXACTLY! Thank you VA. This almost seems like a personal attack at Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder especially since it was done moments before the draft.
