I was born in 1968 so you are tad off.

 

When we were kids, we'd dig our own worms and put them in the Bob Betts Bait Box. It was a metal cylinder that rotated open. When closed, it looked like a can so, we had a "can of worms".
I just looked it up online. They're now considered an "antique"! My dad had 4 or 5 of them.

 

Agreed, we all need those skills. I spent many a day cold as balls deer hunting in November with my Dad and brothers. Sucked balls. I would rather have been playing hockey on the bay or football in the snow.

 

Just like buying at the fish market, if it smells like fish, it's gone off and you don't want to eat it!

 

How We did it back in My 20s - 40s....it was the real deal. We would only bring enough food for the 1st day on a 4 day trip. Everything else was caught, or hunted. I know many many many people who would actually starve in the situation.

 

I live out in the woods and love it

I just do it with creature comforts

Even when I go hang at my buddies remote cabin up by Allegheny National Forest area I sleep out in my Explorer with the windows and tailgate open but I do make a very comfortable bed in the back for my old bones

 

I used to think how many engineers and scientists would die in a nuclear war (back in the 70's and early 80's) and would we end up back in the stone ages if that institutional knowledge was lost. I know how a lightbulb works or a battery works but never could make one. Wow I took this thread in a different direction

My grandpa's house( now my cousin's) is in Allegheny National forest as well as my uncle's at the end of his driveway. Always a place in my heart for that area, it's like time stops there.

 

I've had coworkers ask if I wanted to go ice fishing with them. I always ask why would I do that? They tell me it's great, put your line in the hole and kick back in your fish house and start drinking. Again why? If I wanted to drink I sure as heck not going out in 10 degree weather on a frozen lake or river to do it. I'm staying where it's warm and not anywhere I am risking death to do it.

 

Had a full day of ice fishing today. It's either your thing or it isn't. Twas a quality time indeed.
