Gil is one of the media draft experts that I most respect. In fact, he's one of the few that I really think of as a draft "expert" and not just a media guy. When Gil releases his top 150 every spring, I take notice. Here's how some players linked to us are ranked by Gil. I've bolded the guys who I personally think are our first round targets based on the interest we've shown (by "we" I mean the team, not necessarily us fans!) and where they've been slotted recently in the various "big boards" and mock drafts:

Note - in the (), PD = Tomlin or Colbert attended pro day, PD+ + both attended, V = visit
I'm only counting pro day visits attended by Colbert, Tomlin or both

    18. Pat Mahomes (V)
    20. Jarrad Davis (PD [Colbert & Osalvsky], rumored private meeting/dinner)
    21. Jabrill Peppers (PD+) (I'm gonna lean toward believing Aditee's rumor)

    24. Takk McKinley (V)
    27. Quincy Wilson (PD)
    29. David Njoku (PD & dinner)
    30. TrDavious White (PD [Tomlin & Lake])
    39. Josh Jones (V)
    42. Taco Charlton (PD+ & meeting)
    43. Marlon Humphrey (PD, V)
    44. Marcus Maye (PD & meeting/dinner)
    46. Zach Cunningham (V)
    47. Tim Williams (PD, V)
    48. Chris Wormley (PD+ & dinner)
    49. Ryan Anderson (PD)
    55. Budda Baker (V)
    60. TJ Watt (PD+ & dinner)
    61. Jourdan Lewis (PD+, V)
    69. Obi Melifonwu (V)
    77. Carl Lawson (PD+)
    82. Davis Webb (V)
    83. Josh Dobbs (PD, V)
    85. Cam Sutton (PD)
    91. James Connor (V)
    96. Tanoh Kpassagnon (V, unconfirmed mention of private workout)
    117. Kenny Golloday (V)
    121. Cordrea Tankersley (PD+)
    129. Derek Rivers (V, meeting at all star game)
    141. Shelton Gibson (V)

Like the list. If anything it shows where we are leaning position wise. Lots of ILB, OLB, and DB's in there.

I find Gils ranking of TJ Watt at 60 which means a LATE 2nd rd grade interesting. He is ranking him purely on his 1 yr production. This is who Gil is, a purest, one not to get caught up in hype. I too follow and respect Gil.

Many GMs go BPA only, some go BPA+need and a few go Need+BPA.

TJ will go 1st rd because of his tape, measurables, "Upside" and pedigree. His position will also push him to be drafted higher than Gil has him ranked.

I think Jones looks good, but I'd take Obi over him.

Even though Jones is a really solid prospect, I'd take any of Baker, Obi, Peppers, Maye, or Williams over him. In an ordinary year there are maybe 2 or 3 guys who are as good as the top 8 safeties in this draft. It's a freakishly deep safety class.

not that excited about maye or williams in the box or baker for that matter but as center fielders. peppers i have concerns about too as a SS at the next level. he's got the quicks but when they get him in the box acting like a Lb he can get engulfed at times. if he comes clean he's a play maker.

Gil Brandt is good do you listen to him on Sirius? I don't get to listen to him as much as I would like to, I am a Pat Kirwan fan love what he has to offer. Plus his show MTC is on when I am on the road so I get to listen.

As for these safeties I would love to have any of Obi, Jones or Williams. When this whole draft talk first started I was a Peppers fan, right now if we end up with him I am fine with that but he isn't my must have guy anymore. I don't know a whole lot about Baker and Maye.

I like listening to Gil, and I'm a MTC fan as well. I have always liked Peppers as a good option at #30, but after watching several games of his again recently I'm getting a bit more focused on him as a very desirable pick at #30. One thing though, if we take him and do not use him as a returner, I think we would be missing out on a pretty big part of what makes him a top prospect. We tend not to use defensive players in the return game, but should break that trend if we take him.
