They were supposedly suppose to release him by the end of last week. That didn’t happen so it all may be a moot point anyway.

Your observation is very practical. From a sensical standpoint and traditionally being cautious which is how the Steelers operate I would agree it would be risky to sign this guy to a long term contract and not worth it as a one year rental. The last few times we have stepped out however worked out pretty good for us, example Minkah trade. The nice thing is we will have a boat load of money to spend in free agency next year. The cautious ways of the Steelers serves them well in not over signing outside free agents but on the same token we often overusing our own free agents. Its like we are afraid to see what is out there at times and we our comfortable with the guy we are familiar with even though the guy may have some weaknesses and we throw big money at them for fear of losing them. That is my fear with somebody like Dionte Johnson. We did handle the Edwmonds situation correctly this year however. I would say we over paid Chucks but apparently he was getting comparable offers on the open market.

The Rams had a significantly better defense than the Steelers last year. In addition on Defense outside of DE the most important position is CB. The year before last we had a pretty decent CB room with Haden, Hilton, Sutton and the other guy his name is escaping me. No number one but all solid guys. It would be really interesting to see a true number one cb behind out front seven. But perhaps this group we have now will be similar to the group we had two / three years ago.

I think the key here is having both a good run game along with a really good defense to complement the run game is the formula for success especially if you don’t have that franchise QB. The bottom line is you have to have all three to have a solid chance at the Super Bowl. The problem is franchise QB’s don’t grow on trees so until you get one you might as well build up the two foundational components for success which is Elite Defense and a Dominant Run Game.

Do you have a link on the expense of our defense verse others in the league? I feel it is a bit maligned given our talent level on defense. If it is the highest that is not a true indicator of us being the most talented Defense. We have an aging Defensive line that certainly did not provide a return on investment provided two the guys weren’t on the field last year and I am sure those were two of the higher salaries on defense. Haden was probably our most expensive CB last year with diminishing returns. Plus we had the highest payed defensive player in the NFL with TJ Watt. I understand the economics come into play when building a team but the balance of investment between the offense and defense on this team are going to be vastly different because the offense is primarily all draft picks who are on their first contract and we are not paying that franchise QB salary. The defense is mature and supposed to carry the team. The problem is I still don’t think the defense is fully capable of carrying the team. I still think we are one good CB away from accomplishing that.

What You didn't say is .....
WE(Steelers) are the only team that made the playoffs with a Rush defense this bad....nobody within 10 spots (rankings) of us did. So I'd say yeah....rushing D it matters.

Funny....We were worse in 2019 on Offense...PF 27th, and yards 30th.. Yet our D was 5th in both.
Last Year on Offense...PF 21st, and yards 23rd..Yet our D was...20th, and 24th......So...while We were actually better on Offense last year....Our Defense was way.... way worse.
    How do You explain that???
This ,and Giving up TDs right off the bus,and 1st thing after halftime is the reason I don't buy into that excuse.
Remember My Friend...I'm not arguing...I'm simply discussing with You.

If you sign him don't you also assume his salary he had with the Giants?

Not when your cut. He’ll have a new contract with whatever teams signs him now.

total ranking mean virtually nothing. game by game and opponent by opponent mean more. schedules are harder and easier, injuries to our team and the team we are playing at the time. covid was involved in those years as well with limited fans, players in and out.

last year we went 3 and out a lot. we couldn't score in the first qtr's of games. we didn't start to even get on the board usually until late in the games. our defense had a way of fading in the second half of games, i say mostly because they got wore out by playing way too much in the first half.

now for the biggy...... wait for it..... keith butler and never changing anything during the season or by game. MT calling shots at times, butler calling shots at times. many things contribute to these ranking way more then not having enough defensive draft picks on the team. how many ILB'ers have we been through over the last 5-6 years? the middle of our defense has killed us for years. i have said this for years. bush stinks and we blame everybody we put on the field next to him. vince stunk as well. we changed the way we run the defense too.

2019 was the year ben went down. our opponents were not quite as good that year either. cinci twice. cleveland twice. baltimore wasn't as good. the first few games we gave up tons of yardage. to good teams we gave up a lot. we were not really as good as our rankings stated on defense. we did move the ball better in some games with mason then we did with ben at the beginning of the year. rankins can be very misleading until you look at each game.

His value would have been higher if he was cut at the beginning of FA

I suspect he will now wait hoping someone gets hurt in camp

Watched every game My Friend. Honestly have not missed a Game since 1997. The Year I got NFL Sunday Ticket. So if I'm not watching it in person....I'm watching on tv.
    It's just not adding up.
Time of Possession, Points , and Yards are all worse in 2019 than in 2021 on offense...Yet our Defense was way better in everything in 2019 than 2021. So again IMO blaming the offense last year just doesn't add up.
Otherwise our Defense would have been even worse in 2019....not much better.
I guess We will just have 2 agree 2 disagree.

But according to STD they need to draft all defense , the Steelers offense did the defense no favors the last few years.

All of those guys are older and past their prime, at this point they aren't better options than Chuks and Moore IMO.

Another person falling for it. Guess You don't read everything. Again offense was worse in everything in 2019 than in 2021....yet the Defense was better in 2019 than 2021 in everything. So....I don't know what You have that supports that.....besides just saying it.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I guess you don't realize teams aren't going to win games 13-10 on a consistent basis, offenses today are too good, and the rules favor the offense .

And who were they going to get to be their #1 CB? you're living in the past thinking the Steelers are going to dominate on defense.

OK. Still doesn't cover Your...our offense was the reason last year the defense was bad last year.
It can be done...., but not if You only have 3 great players on Defense.
For instance Bills only allowed 5 team 2 score 21 , or more points last year, and stopped 5 teams from scoring more than 10 points.
OK. Because You say it's so ....therefore it must Be.
It's cool. At least I'm backing up what I'm saying with facts....not just....because I say.

That's on the coaches. Stupid play calling....they got scared, and choked. LoL. You forget they beat the Chiefs earlier in the season.....held them to 20 points.

Pittsburgh's pass defense wasn't horrible last season. (somewhere around 9th or so. Too lazy to look it up.)
A guy like Bradberry could help them as he is not bad in run support as well.
He could alleviate some pressure on the Safety spot as he's good in Man, if need be.
I just see some teams loading up a truck with money and that's tough to compete with.
It's tough to gauge Pittsburgh's interest.
