I don't doubt some teams may choose to do this for a game or 2.

I just don't see it accomplishing anything.

And if a team wins by forfeit, I can hear the gnashing of teeth how they too should have sat out. Nope. If you have the courage of your convictions, a loss shouldn't matter to you.

I won't get into this side or that. Do whatever you feel is right. But be willing to accept whatever consequence that leads to.

In my view, if a team or individual players choose to sit out a game, then I question whether they have a commitment to winning. If players want to protest in other ways, like kneeling during the anthem, or whatever, whether or not I support them making those protests doesn’t detract from the respect I have for their will to win and support their teammates on the field. If they decide to sit out games, I’m not sure whether I’ll watch when they come back. Do your job players. I don’t get to call my employer and say “sorry I’m not going to do my job” without repercussions.

Edit - just to be clear to those wanting to tackle the politics, this is not a statement about the reasons for protesting, or whether they should have a right to protest, its about the fundamental obligation for employees to do the job that they have been contracted to do. It’s about whether players are committed to winning, and can find other ways to express their views. Let’s make sure that this thread doesn’t go down a politics/race relations path. Thanks.

I like Coach T's take on it - "we want to make an impact rather than a statement" steers a line between the game and the wider social issues very well, I think. Interesting that I understand they've set up a social justice group of some kind in the team where they can talk about issues and how they might address them in the community.

I don't watch sports to become politically motivated. It's purely entertainment that I can easily replace my valuable time with. If they want to use that platform to spark an interest in racial injustice they will lose my support forever along with many others support which will eventually lead to a loss of their revenue. To make a difference they need to meet with leaders in the community to resolve these issues through open dialog. In the end, I don't care if they play their sports or not but they should realize they are ultimately committing capitalistic suicide and they shouldn't bite the hand that feeds them.

If the Giants choose to do it, I'll respect their choice. If the Steelers choose to do it, I'll respect their choice. If, in their opinion, the only way they can get us to listen to them is withhold their talents, then that's a choice they have to make for themselves.
I'll be back when they start playing.

Just imagine if every team but Cleveland protested by sitting out games all season, the Browns might actually have a shot at winning the superbowl!

I think that's the point of sitting out. It transcends winning or losing, it shows they feel there's something more important going on right now.

I'm glad you were able to make some sense of his comment, because I couldn't.
To me, It was another Tomlin word salad that left me with more questions then answers.
    Tomlin:
“We desire to have an impact, more so than statements,” Tomlin said. “We want to be proactive in our behavior and thoughts. I continue to appreciate the heart and spirit of wanting to participate and express themselves. That is their right. They will continue to be supported by us as long as it’s done thoughtfully and with class.
“But we also understand we are targets with our opinions . . . and they can be weaponized. We want to move forward thoughtfully. We are excited to be a part of solutions if we can be.”

Article 19 of the NFL Constitution: “There shall be no postponement of regular-season games unless said game cannot be played because of an act of God or because of a state, federal or local prohibition.”

I am a huge LA Laker fan. I have been for almost as long as I have been a Steeler fan. I was really enjoying the NBA playoffs up until this point. The NBA owners, and fans for that matter, have done everything they can to bring awareness to social injustice. The coaches wear racial injustice name badges during games. The court and "bubble" arena says Black Lives Matter pretty much everywhere a viewers eyes can see. The players were granted permission to express their views on the back of the jerseys. Commentators comment almost as much on the social issues of the day as they do on the coverage of the actual sport itself. Other than making it mandatory to have Black Lives Matter tattooed on the players foreheads, Im really not sure how much more awareness the NBA can spread.

Now we are going to boycott games? I am really not sure when its going to be enough. Social change can not be achieved on a basketball court, or a football field. So I have decided to not follow the rest of the NBA playoffs, should they decide to begin playing again. My favorite basketball team will likely win their 17th championship and I will not watch. I will not buy the hat and tee shirt I undoubtedly would have purchased. They can count me out. These guys are way more concerned with whats going on off the floor than they are winning a championship. These guys clearly do not need my business.

I have spent a good portion of my life as a player and coach in both football and basketball. I am a firm believer in sports being about a group of guys that come together as a whole, to accomplish something greater than themselves. I have put up with the NFL over officiating the game. I have put up with constant rule changes that I rarely agree with. I have put up with players using games to bring awareness to political issues and social issues. I will NOT put up with NFL players boycotting games. If even one NFL game gets cancelled do to a player boycott, that will be the final straw for me. Again, these guys are all millionaires. They do not need my business.

I am so very close to losing the 3% interest of what I used to have in the NFL I don't care at this point if they just pull the damn plug on the whole season.

This season should be cancelled so these players can become full time protesters, since they are more focused on protesting than they are football......

I'll give Coach Tomlin and the Steelers credit. Of the 4 minority NFL head coaches he was the only one who had his team practice yesterday and they he said they never even really considered not practicing.

Truth be told the Rooney family and Steelers organization have probably done for minorities and African American people than any organization in the NFL. So maybe that has something to do with it maybe it has zero to do with it. But, you can't fault the Rooney family one bit for trying to promote and help African Americans outside of just being football players.

In reading the responses on here, some are very well thought out and reasoned, it is clear how these protests are not having the effect intend or how little they do to advance the discussion.
