He’s pretty much unguardable. Imagine Shanahan drawing up plays for DJ. Hoping Glenn Thomas is running the passing concepts like some have speculated.

With any luck, Canada now reads a bit more into analytics... like he's supposed to! :drinks:

Well... as I said, Kenny being the Rookie QB he was definitely didn't help. Within that same vein, lest I forget about some of the WTF moments that Diontae had even in the very seldom chances he received whenever a play was drawn up for him; running either sideways or backwards. Unless Tyreek Hill is charitable enough to let Diontae have some of his tremendous speed and explosiveness.. Diontae isn't out running too many people.

Now, getting open as a Wide Receiver is a lot more than just footwork; lateral explosiveness, lateral agility, quick Change of Direction (COD for short) and leverage... to name a few. That said and, as you pointed out, getting open is only half of the job for the Wide Receiver. The other components are to not only catch the ball but provide positive results when the ball is secured in the hand.

The unguardable aspect was not the issue with Diontae for me. Hell, Route Running, as far as overall problems are concerned, don't exist with me regarding him. Some of his WTF Moments were. My issues with Diontae have never been talented related.

Consistency related though?!... that is another set of circumstances there. Yes, literally going from.... whatever the hell remained of Big Ben to a Rookie QB still finding his way in Pickett is not an easy feat; much less for any WR who did face similar woes. Canada sure as hell didn't help.

However, what can be controlled is the opportunities that are given to a player. Once those positive plays happen for them, it is upon them to make it work. While Diontae did have some success doing this during the second half of the season... others clearly didn't yield as much positive net gain as one would have hoped.

I can see a problem brewing if thy don’t give him enough play with his kind of talk.

There’s a balance to be achieved, and hopefully Pickens can accept it. He absolutely should get more targets. At least 2-3 more per game than he did last season. At the same time, when those targets start to produce more points for the team and better numbers for him, he needs to recognize that his play is opening up easy opportunities for his teammates, and matchups that we need to exploit while 2 defenders are following him 40 yards down the field.

If all goes as it should, I would expect an 80+ catch, 1,200 yard, 10-12 TD type of season from Pickens.

They still need DJ to make defenses pay and keep them honest. If Pickens starts to face double-teams, I don't know how well he will do.

The good news is that if Pickens really turns into a monster, it is going to open everything else up if he is drawing double teams or rolling coverage his way. They have some other guys that can do real damage if that happens. Can Pickens keep his head, not allow himself to get frustrated by not catching as many balls, and continue working on route running and ways to defeat double-teams so they can still feed him the ball? Only time will tell.

I hope he starts destroying defenses and we find out very soon. I can't wait to see it.

This video is top plays for Pickens 2022, well worth viewing. You can see how he adjusts to the ball and extends arm on deep throws along with his bear trap hands.

I love this kids confidence and swagger. A Pickett to Pickens combination like Ben to AB would be incredible. :coolcool:
